Preview: Steven Bergwijn helped Tottenham create a piece of Premier League history in the season’s reverse encounter, the Dutchman’s brace deep into stoppage-time seeing Spurs come from 2-1 down with nearly 95 minutes on the clock to win 3-2. Another goal-laden renewal looks to be on the cards this Sunday.

Tottenham – Spurs out to regain grip on fourth spot?

After successive winless games, Tottenham are back to relying on favours from others – as well as having to win their own remaining games – if they are to finish the season in the Champions League places. Last week’s goalless draw away at Brentford followed hot on the heels of their 1-0 loss at home to Brighton, with Antonio Conte’s previously free scoring outfit failing to muster a shot on target in either encounter.

It is hoped, then, that the visit from a defensively porous Leicester team can reinvigorate a Spurs attack lauded as the best in the Premier League only a matter of weeks ago. Returning to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium should also accelerate their recovery. Prior to the Brighton game, Conte’s men had won three in a row in North London. Racking up big wins over Everton (5-0), Newcastle (5-1) and West Ham (3-1).

Key Stat: Since Leicester returned to the Premier League in 2014, against no other opponent has Tottenham scored more often in the league than they have against the Foxes (36 in 15 games).

Leicester – Foxes workload to catch up with them?

The timing of Sunday’s fixture, with it falling in between both legs of their European semi-final against Italian side AS Roma, is far from ideal as Leicester go about halting a three-game winless league run (D2 L1). Brendan Rodgers is expected to make changes, as he has done throughout the second half of the season, and might explain the listless display last time out. Creating 0.26 xGF in a 0-0 home draw with Aston Villa.

That was a third game in a row in which Leicester failed to generate more than 0.83 xGF, which spells big trouble ahead of their visit to North London. Only four teams have conceded more on their travels this season than the Foxes (31 in 16 away games). They have only managed a single clean sheet in their past 23 away league fixtures and have one win from the last eleven (D4 L6) away from the King Power Stadium.

Key Stat: Last week’s goalless draw at home to Aston Villa snapped a sequence of five consecutive Premier League games seeing both team score for Leicester.

Tottenham Vs Leicester City Betting Advice

According to the reliable folk at Opta, no team on record (since the 2003-04 season) has gone three consecutive games in the Premier League without having a shot on target. Spurs failed to produce any in their last two fixtures. That is damning. However, Sunday’s visit from a Leicester side averaging 2xGA away from home this season gives them ample opportunity to rediscover their scoring swagger.

Tottenham Vs Leicester – Key Facts:

  • Leicester City’s collapse in November, when losing 3-2 despite being 2-1 in front with 94 minutes played, meant a third loss in their past four league meetings with Tottenham.
  • Tottenham won three home league games on the spin, scoring 13, before a 1-0 defeat to Brighton in their latest outing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Meanwhile, Leicester have won only once on their travels in eleven attempts (D4 L6).
  • Harry Kane has scored more goals against Leicester than any other opponent in his career, the forward bagging 18 goals in 17 appearances against the Foxes. Including a brace the last time Spurs beat Leicester in the capital, in July 2020.

Brendan Rodgers will make changes to the Leicester team which competed in Europe on Thursday, but I suspect this won’t be enough to avoid defeat here. Yet, the Foxes do have a habit of scoring, netting in nine of the last eleven league games including the last three away from home. So the guests are capable of contributing, while it is worth noting each of Spurs’ last four home victories also saw Over 2.5 Goals.
