Preview: It has been a memorable debut campaign in the German top division so far for Union Berlin. So it is therefore a shame that their loyal fans are set to miss this Sunday’s home meeting with Bayern Munich, who were made to sweat for a narrow success in the reverse fixture.

Union Berlin Preview – Safety all-but assured for Die Eisernen?

Available at short odds to be relegated this season before a ball was even kicked, it would be completely fair to say Union Berlin (11th – W9 D3 L13, GF32 GA41), a club experiencing their first taste of the German top-flight, have defied most expectations to be in such a healthy position. With nine games remaining they are on course to retain their status among the country’s elite, nestled cosily in mid-table and some eight points clear of the relegation play-off.

A downside will be the fact one of those remaining fixtures pits them against none other than the champions, who also happen to be top of the pile as the league resumes. And yet, Union pushed their illustrious opposition close in the reverse encounter in Munich, losing 2-1 on the day but showcasing no inferiority complex at the Allianz Arena in applying late pressure and almost snatching an unthinkable point.

A big reason behind their success so far, though, has been performances on home soil (W6 D1 L5). Enabling them to level the playing field at times. Six of their nine victories this season were inside their Stadion An der Alten Forsterei. Second placed Dortmund fell 3-1 there on Matchday 3, as did Gladbach (2-0) on Matchday 12, while Leverkusen (2-3) and Wolfsburg (2-2) were both given scares in the capital before action was suspended in March.

Bayern Munich Preview – Die Roten showing no mercy in pursuit of Meisterschale?

When play was brought to a temporary stop in March there appeared only one winner as far as winning the league went. Four consecutive league victories, scoring 15 times in the process, meant a four point cushion over a dogged chasing pack whose form hasn’t actually dipped by much but still isn’t a match for Bayern Munich (1st – W17 D4 L4, GF73 GA26). It is now a general 2/9 that the championship remains in Bavarian hands for an eighth straight term.

There really hasn’t been much let up for a while now. RB Leipzig’s goalless stalemate at the Allianz Arena in February representing the only blot on Bayern’s copybook since early December. That is ten wins from the last eleven played in the league. Imperious stuff. Away from home they have won five straight, scoring a minimum of three in each.

Hansi Flick’s well-oiled juggernaut could take some stopping then even if there are some legitmate concerns as to how much an effect a loss of rhythm could have. The numbers do speak for themselves though: no team has registered more away points this season (W9 D2 L2). Meanwhile nobody really gets close to their scoring prowess, averaging nearly three (2.92) per game on their travels.

Union Berlin Vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

It would be romantic to think the hosts could spring an upset. Union Berlin have shown their capabilities throughout the campaign and optimistic supporters can justifiably highlight victories over Dortmund and Gladbach as reasons to be bullish. This is Bayern Munich, though, a team which has squashed all comers since Hansi Flick took over the reins.

Union Berlin Vs Bayern Munich Key Facts

  • A minimum of two goals were scored by Union Berlin in five of their previous six home Bundesliga games (W3 D1 L2).
  • Away from home, Bayern Munich are on a winning streak of five matches in the league, scoring at least three goals in all five encounters (20 in total).
  • This will mark only a second ever Bundesliga meeting between the two clubs, with Bayern Munich only narrowly prevailing at Allianz Arena last October, winning 2-1.

With a passionate home support behind them, Union would have had every chance of posing some problems. Without that, it is incredibly difficult seeing past anything other than a straightforward Bayern victory. A couple of popular winning bets when Bayern have travelled this season have been -1.5 Asian Handicap (8/13 Unibet) and a Bayern win coupled with Over 3.5 Goals. Both bets delivered in seven of their eight away triumphs.
