Union Berlin – Race for fourth intensifying?

If last week was a precursor for life post-Max Kruse, then the early signs are exactly encouraging. Previously, Union Berlin hadn’t won any of five games in which Kruse had been conspicuously absent, and this quickly became six after losing 2-0 away to relegation-threatened Augsburg – who were without a win in six beforehand – in the last round. The sole consolation being that so many rivals also came unstuck.

Such a reprieve will have been well received by Die Eisernen. Seeing a five-match unbeaten streak snapped at the WWKA Arena despite shading the xG battle (xG: AUG 1.93 – 2.19 UNB). Unfortunately, though, those efforts went unrewarded as they failed to capitalise onothers misfortune. Leaving them still occupying the fourth and final Champions League spot, but with a host of teams now breathing down their necks.

Key Stat: Only four teams (Mainz, RB Leipzig, Dortmund and Bayern) have earned more points from their home league games in 2021-22 than Union Berlin (21/30: W6 D3 L1) – who have only tasted defeat once across their previous 26 Bundesliga contests at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei (W14 D11).

Borussia Dortmund – Title aspirations all but extinguished?

A groin problem prevented 16-goal club top-scorer Erling Haaland from lining up last time against Leverkusen. And while this didn’t hinder the team’s efforts in front of goal – scoring twice to maintain their 100% record in Bundesliga home games this season for scoring in multiples – the Norwegian’s unmistakable absence meant the Black and Yellows never really gained a foothold in proceedings, going down 5-2.

That marked the club’s heaviest defeat since Stuttgart also hit them for five last season, costing Lucien Favre his role as head coach. There is no suggestion Marco Rose is about to endure the same fate, though, and nor should he. Dortmund are still five points clear in second, previously beating Frankfurt, Freiburg and Hoffenheim by an 11-5 aggregate – but any faint hopes of reeling Bayern in were all but extinguished.

Key Stat: Each of the last five Bundesliga games involving Borussia Dortmund saw at least four goals but also both teams scoring. Meanwhile, all of their last three away matches ended in a 3-2 scoreline (W2 L1).

Union Berlin Vs Borussia Dortmund Betting Advice

The fact Dortmund occupy the loftier position of the two sides, perched two places and nine points above Union Berlin, can be the only reason for them being odds-on on Sunday. For this is a fixture that is still to see an away victory, suggesting that in actual fact it is the 3/1 about the hosts collecting all three points at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei for a third season in a row that is the true value.

Union Berlin Vs Borussia Dortmund – Key Facts:

  • All five previous Bundesliga head-to-heads were won by the home team. At this ground, Union Berlin have produced scorelines of 3-1 and 2-1 across the last two seasons.
  • We could very well see a similar scoreline on Sunday. This is because Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score has returned a winning selection in Dortmund’s past five matches.
  • However, only two teams boast meaner defences in front of their own fans than that of Union Berlin. Die Eisernen’s defence has only been breached nine times in ten home games in 2021-22.

As if to further emphasise the task facing Dortmund, only one team has departed this venue with maximum points May 2020, spanning 26 games. That was Bayern, which highlights what it takes to overcome Urs Fischer’s men on their turf. Die Eisernen’s record here has also been excellent this season, winning 60% of the time and conceding under a goal-a-game. Therefore, I cannot help but feel Dortmund are a lay.
