Preview: The Stadion An der Alten Forsterei isn’t the most forgiving of venues, which is something RB Leipzig know all about having lost here across each of the last two seasons. Can Union Berlin, unbeaten in their last seven Bundesliga home games, make it another forgettable foray for the DFB Cup holders?

Union Berlin – Unbeaten run approaching double digits?

The first two rounds of the 2022-23 Bundesliga season are in the books. So far there has been a healthy dose of goals, with 61 coming across 18 matches for an average of 3.39 per game, and only the one 0-0 scoreline. Union Berlin got their campaign underway by claiming local bragging rights in the capital, a convincing 3-1 home success over Hertha Berlin, before playing their part in that forgettable scoreless affair.

Last week’s draw away at Mainz did have its positives, though, with that a ninth consecutive Bundesliga outing without defeat for Urs Fischer’s side. A club record comprising seven victories since a 4-0 loss in March at Bayern Munich no less. They haven’t lost a home league fixture since February (W5 D2), meanwhile, losing only twice at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei in their past 24 top-flight matches there.

Key Stat: With four points from their opening two fixtures, this is already the best start to a Bundesliga campaign in club history. Union Berlin have never won their first two home games to start a Bundesliga season, meanwhile; defeating Hertha Berlin 3-1 at home on MD1.

RB Leipzig – Werner already loving Bundesliga return?

Some players just seem better suited to a particular league. That appears true of Timo Werner. The forward opening his account at the first time of asking, on his return to the club with whom he built up a fearsome reputation for being a prolific goalscorer, in last week’s 2-2 home draw with FC Koln. A perfect start for Werner, less so for his new team-mates who are still searching for that first league win of the campaign.

Having also been held on Matchday 1, a 1-1 draw away at Stuttgart, it means last season’s fourth-placed finishers are enduring easily their worst run of results since Domenico Tedesco took charge last December. Die Rotten Bullen would win just one of six previous league games (D3 L2) – a 4-0 scoreline at home to FC Augsburg – and must go about bettering than lean spell without the suspended Dominik Szoboszlai.

Key Stat: After drawing with Stuttgart in their solitary away assignment of this season, RB Leipzig are now winless in three-straight Bundesliga road matches (D2 L1) having previously won five such games in a row from February to April.

Union Berlin Vs RB Leipzig Betting Advice

Odds of 3/4 about Union Berlin taking at least a point from this fixture look more than reasonable, for a number of reasons. The first being their exceptional home record, having lost only two of the last 24 Bundesliga contests at this venue – and none of the previous seven (W5 D2). Another is their current nine game unbeaten league run, which is the longest ongoing run without incurring a loss in the division.

Union Berlin Vs RB Leipzig – Key Facts:

  • All of the previous three Bundesliga meetings between the teams has ended with a 2-1 scoreline in favour of Union Berlin. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig have never failed to score against Die Eisernen across all six of their Bundesliga meetings.
  • Whereas RB Leipzig are stuck in something of a rut, with one win from their past six Bundesliga contests (D3 L2), Union Berlin are enjoying a club-record nine game run without defeat (W7 D2) in the German top-flight.
  • Union Berlin have the lowest Expected Goals Against value in the Bundesliga this season (1.0). It is a record that will come under scrutiny this weekend, though, as only two sides have unleashed more shots this campaign than the 37 of RB Leipzig.

Then there is Union’s recent record in this fixture. After losing each of the first three Bundesliga meetings between the clubs, Die Eisernen are now on a three-match winning streak of their own; doing the double over RB Leipzig in the league last term – winning both encounters 2-1 – either side of a 2-1 DFB Pokal Cup defeat. Die Rotten Bullen are also in something of a rut, winning only one of the last six league games.
