Union Berlin Preview – Die Eisernen looking all set for a second term?

Victory at the Commerzbank-Arena last Monday helped Union Berlin (10th – W9 D2 L12) climb into tenth position in the Bundesliga table and move nine points clear of the relegation play-off. Swedish international Sebastian Andersson opened the scoring with his ninth league goal of the campaign as Eintracht Frankfurt were beaten 2-1 in front of their own fans, some of which refused to attend the match as a means of protesting against the DFB’s decision to sanction fixtures on a Monday.

Monday night football in the German Bundesliga is set to be scrapped from 2021-22 onward. That move came too late for Frankfurt. It didn’t appear to unduly bother the visitors, though, who are now a couple more wins from essentially extending their top-flight participation into next term. Of their nine league victories so far, six were attained in home fixtures where they are able to boast a 55 per cent winning ratio across the season (W6 D0 L5).

Meanwhile, we still await the first drawn encounter at Union Berlin’s home ground – the only venue in this season’s Bundesliga without one. So this fixture should go one of two ways, helping to simplify matters for punters. Two defeats in their last three home matches may be off-putting to some. Urs Fischer’s side did reel off four consecutive wins at home between October and December, though, and would notch two or more goals in four of the most recent five to suggest they can be competitive here.

Wolfsburg Preview – Wolves must defy midweek exertions?

By cruising to a 4-0 victory at home to FSV Mainz last time out, Wolfsburg (7th – W8 D7 L7) would stretch their unbeaten run of games in the league to four – their longest such sequence since the end of October, when going their first nine fixtures without incurring a loss. It was a second win on the spin for Oliver Glasner and his side, who have now won more times across the last four Bundesliga rounds (3) than in the previous twelve combined (2).

Die Wolfe (The Wolves) have been rewarded for this resurgent form by returning to the top half of the table, sitting only two points shy of the Europa League berths (top-six finish). A competition they know all about having featured extensively in it this season, and as recently as Thursday when in Round of 32 action over in Sweden.

It is a relatively swift turnaround from that encounter to this, and Glasner may look towards his fringe players in order to field enough fresh legs. He certainly won’t want to allow their recent momentum to dissipate. Victory on Sunday, against a team only narrowly beaten 1-0 in the reverse fixture at the Volskwagen Arena, would represent a third away win in as many league games having recently secured maximum points on trips to Paderborn (2-4) and Hoffenheim (2-3).

Union Berlin Vs Wolfsburg Betting Advice

Both teams approach this fixture on the back of recent league wins. Union Berlin have now won three of their last five Bundesliga games while Wolfsburg have won three and drawn one of their last four. So this should be an entertaining contest between two confident sets of players. The hosts are averaging 1.64 points per home game this season (W6 D0 L5), which is not too dissimilar to the 1.55 Wolfsburg are averaging away from home (W5 D2 L4).

Union Berlin Vs Wolfsburg – Key Facts

  • Union Berlin have won six of their eleven Bundesliga home games thus far, with five of those victories achieved whilst restricting the opposition to no goals.
  • Wolfsburg are now four matches without losing in the league (W3 D1) and are aiming to win a third consecutive away fixture in the Bundesliga.
  • This will be just the second head-to-head meeting in the Bundesliga, with the first taking place at Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena in October. The hosts prevailing 1-0 that day.

Thursday’s trip to Sweden will have sapped some of the energy from Wolfsburg legs, although it is often said that players tend not to feel fatigue as much when winning matches. Even so, this could be another demanding outing. Union Berlin scored in all but two home games this season, and have netted two or more in four of the last five. The visitors, meanwhile, scored seven times in their last two away encounters but gave up a couple of goals on both instances. It would therefore be a surprise were there not goals here.
