Preview: It is looking increasingly likely that Sevilla are the only team capable of catching Real Madrid in La Liga this season. Julen Lopetegui’s men can move on to 47 points – two shy of the summit – provided they pick up maximum points from their midweek trip to the Mestalla to take on mid-table Valencia.

Valencia – Wednesday’s hosts too streaky to be trusted?

If qualification for either of the continental competitions was the agenda before the season got underway in August, well then Valencia need to increase their productivity as they are currently not on course to achieve their objectives. A crushing 4-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu to Real Madrid was far from an ideal start to the new year, and marked a second loss in the league in as many matches.

They will resume down in tenth, four points adrift of the top-six. However, Los Murcielagos were ticking along nicely prior to this slump, going unbeaten in seven (W4 D3) as they steadily made inroads in the La Liga standings. Each of their last six have seen goals at both ends of the field. Suggesting we could be in for quite the spectacle at Mestalla, where Jose Bordalas’ men have won only two of their last eight (D4 L2).

Key Stat: All of Valencia’s last five La Liga matches have seen three or more goals but also both teams scoring. There has been a goal scored in the 85th minute or later in each of their last four league contests.

Sevilla – Los Nervionenses to apply concerted pressure on leaders?

With leaders Real Madrid not involved in this midweek round of fixtures having played a game more than everyone else, there is an opportunity for their closest pursuer, Sevilla, to close the gap at the top to only two points. This would require Julen Lopetegui masterminding a win at Mestalla, as he did last season (0-1). That the club’s first triumph away to Valencia for nearly eight years (D3 L5 previous to this).

Yet, with the meanest defensive action in the Spanish top tier (13 conceded in 20 games) and the second best away record (W5 D3 L2), they are favourites to improve upon a wretched record in Valencia. That defence of theirs could have a significant role to play. All five away victories this term were accompanied by a clean sheet, winning none of the four encounters on the road in which they conceded.

Key Stat: There have been fewer than three goals scored in nine of ten Sevilla La Liga away matches in 2021-22. The exception being their 2-1 reverse at Real Madrid, conceding in the 87th minute to tarnish their near-impeccable Under 2.5 Goals streak.

Valencia Vs Sevilla Betting Advice

Depending on how you view this contest, one could reach any number of potential conclusions. Goals are usually guaranteed whenever Valencia are involved. Their last six in the league seeing Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score. This isn’t reciprocated, however. All but one of the ten Sevilla away league games this season went Under 2.5 Goals, with three seeing both teams among the goals.

Valencia Vs Sevilla – Key Facts:

  • Sevilla are seeking to win successive away La Liga matches against Valencia for the first time since 2005. They were winless across eight visits prior to a 1-0 win in last season’s corresponding fixture.
  • The visitors cause is boosted by their reasonably consistent away form this term. A record of W5 D3 L2 is currently the second best in La Liga. All five wins were to nil.
  • Meanwhile, Valencia have found wins much more elusive as hosts, winning only two of the last eight such matches (D4 L2). All of the last four saw Over 2.5 Goals and BTTS.

I’m inclined to believe this meticulous Sevilla outfit can exert a level of control on proceedings. Julen Lopetegui’s team haven’t been breached on more than one occasion in nine of ten away league games thus far, winning the last two such fixtures 1-0. Nor any of their last six (W5 D1), home and away, since the narrow loss at Real Madrid. Valencia, on the other hand, are coming off successive La Liga defeats.
