Villareal Preview – Can Villareal make it six straight wins in all competitions to boost top four hopes?

Villareal may be sitting in 10th spot approaching their first game of the calendar year but they will still feel they are in with a realistic chance of finishing in the top four and qualifying for next season’s Champions League. At the time of writing, they are seven points behind Atletico Madrid who occupy fourth and have this game in hand. With the second half of the season to come after this match there is more than enough football to be played for them to close on the teams above them.

Another big advantage Villareal have is their current run of form. They are looking to win a sixth straight match – something they have not done since April last year.

It takes some doing but Levante are one game away from going through a half of the season without winning a game in La Liga. Alessio Lisci (formerly in charge of the B team) was chosen to take over the first time back in November but he will be under illusions as to the size of the challenge which he has on his hands.

Levante are eight points from safety and the longer they go without picking up wins the wider that gap is going to be. They haven’t finished lower than 15th since winning promotion back to the top-flight in 2017.

It will be no surprise that they also have the worst defensive record in the division. Levante concede, on average, exactly two goals a game. Their concession of 21 goals on the road is also a league high whilst collecting only two points from a possible 27 on their travels is a sobering record. They’ve also not kept a clean sheet on the road.

One reason for hope is that they tend to score when playing away. They’ve scored in six of their nine away games in the league and that includes against two of the current top three (Sevilla and Real Betis).

Looking at the respective records and squads of these teams then anything other than a home win would be a huge surprise. The hosts are strong at home and are up against the team with the worst away record who also leak goals. Villareal have also dominated this fixture in recent times with seven wins in the last 10 meetings.

Levante’s last win here in the league was more than 10 years ago, coming back in October 2011.

I fully expect Emery’s men to make it six straight wins but the selection is for them to do it and both teams scoring. It has won in four of Villareal’s last five games whilst Levante have found the net in six of their nine away games so far.
