This weekend’s action in the Spanish top flight wraps up on Monday night when sixth placed Villarreal take on bottom half outfit, Athletic Bilbao, at their Estadio de la Cerámica with the hosts looking to cling onto the last remaining european spot in La Liga.
Villarreal’s recent form has been patchy though as they’ve won just three matches from their last nine, with wins over Getafe, Las Palmas and most notable of all, a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, while form at home has been up and down in recent weeks.
Villarreal possess a reasonable home record of 8-2-4 25/15 and they’ve won four of their last six on home turf. Forwards, Bacca (9 goals), Unal and Sansone (4 goals apiece) will look to create problems here this evening.
Onto Athletic Bilbao, and the visitors currently occupy a disappointing 13th place on the La Liga ladder which is largely due to a rather poor campaign away from home which have seen them record just three wins on the road all season.
Overall, Athletic Bilbao have registered just two wins from their last 12 matches which were against Malaga and Leganes who both occupy the lower reaches of La Liga, and both were recorded at their San Mamés Barria where they’ve lost just twice all season.
However, it’s been their results away from home which have been their achilles heel to date, with an overall away record of 3-4-8 16/25 and this includes no wins from their last six on the road, as well as losing their last four matches on their travels on the trot with defeats at Girona, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Barcelona.
In short, Villarreal should win but I advise using the handicap in view of their recent indifferent results.
