Preview: Already-relegated Watford will host their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday. They welcome a Leicester City team that has proved their undoing on two occasions this season, the Foxes seeking to follow up on 4-1 and 4-2 victories at their King Power Stadium in the FA Cup and Premier League respectively.

Watford – Hornets desperate for season to end?

Despite the best efforts of three managers – one of them among the finest in the business at keeping teams in the Premier League – Watford will be playing their football back in the Championship from next season. Their relegation fate confirmed with last week’s 1-0 loss away to Crystal Palace. A sixth defeat in a row. Although the rot was stopped with a goalless home draw against Everton in midweek.

That result against Everton did at least bring about a first point at Vicarage Road since November, halting a run of 11 successive home league defeats since a memorable 4-1 win over Manchester United. They would also register their first Premier League clean sheet at home for 23 games. But, having already shipped four to Leicester in both the league and cup this season, back-to-back shutouts seems a long shot.

Key Stat: Watford have scored under 1.5 team goals in 15 of 18 Premier League home games in 2021-22, failing to score in eight of these.

Leicester City – Foxes finally showing bite as season closes?

Wednesday’s 3-0 victory over already-relegated Norwich City marked a first win in six Premier League games (D2 L3) for Leicester, whose recent dip could be attributed to the balancing act of going deep into their European campaign. That is no longer a concern of theirs after they were eliminated at the last four stage of the Europa Conference League by Roma, allowing them to really attack the final fixtures of 2021-22.

This was undoubtedly the case during the week as the Foxes preyed on the helpless Canaries. Brendan Rodgers now has four wins from five league meetings with Norwich boss Dean Smith. Only against two other managers does he boast a better success rate, with one of those being Roy Hodgson whose Watford side await at Vicarage Road on Sunday. Although they last won at this particular ground in March 2016 (D1 L3 since).

Key Stat: Leicester have only managed to keep one clean sheet across their last 24 Premier League away games, although did score themselves in 22 of these.

Watford Vs Leicester City Betting Advice

Leicester haven’t won an away league game in their five previous attempts (D2 L3), since beating Burnley at Turf Moor at the beginning of March. Nevertheless, I am happy to get them on side against a Watford that has offered scant resistance to the inevitable threat that was relegation. The Hornets have earned one point from their last seven games (D1 L6), scoring just three, and lost 11 of their past 12 at Vicarage Road.

Watford Vs Leicester City – Key Facts:

  • While Leicester do boast 4-1 and 4-2 wins against Watford already this season, the Foxes have only won two of the last 11 league meetings at Vicrage Road (D2 L7) – which includes none of the last four (D1 L3).
  • It is difficult to see that run extending any further though. Watford are without a home league win since November, losing 11 consecutive said games before Wednesday’s goalless draw with Everton.
  • Leicester have only managed to win three of their 17 away games in the Premier League this season. However, these wins were against teams currently 13th (Brentford), 17th (Burnley) and 20th (Norwich).

For those after a little more juice in the visitors’ price, how about adding Over 2.5 Goals into the mix? The stats tell us that Leicester have played 107 Premier League games on Sundays, with these contests producing on average 3.3 goals. Having already put four past the same opponents twice this season – albeit both were at the King Power Stadium – the precedent is clearly there for another big Leicester win.
