Watford recorded their second win of the season last week and face a Newcastle team desperately searching for their first when they travel to Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Watford Preview – Will Watford build on their excellent away win and heap more misery on opponents?

Last weekend’s win away to Norwich was important for a number of reasons for Watford. It was their first victory since the opening day of the season and ended a run of three straight defeats. It also came against a team who they are expecting to be in direct competition with to avoid relegation and another of the promoted teams. On the basis of that game alone the Hornets are much better equipped to stay in the Premier League and it will give them confidence heading into this match against another team currently residing in the bottom three.

Watford’s other league win came against Aston Villa when they raced into a three goal lead but ended up hanging on to win 3-2.

Sandwiched between those victories were defeats to Brighton, Tottenham and Wolves. All of those losses happened without them scoring and there were real concerns as to where the goals would come from over the course of the season to keep them in the league. On a more positive note they are not conceding the number of goals that fellow relegation candidates are.

Five of Watford’s six goals in the league this season have been scored by two players. The impressive Ismalia Sarr and Emmanuel Dennis are on three and two goals respectively. You feel they have to find goals from elsewhere in the team rather than solely rely on that duo.

Newcastle Preview – Can Toon Army find their first league win of the season?

Newcastle are never far away from a crisis and Steve Bruce knows that only too well. So the winless start to this season has been less than ideal. The Toon Army are third bottom coming into this game with only two points from a possible 15. Their draws have come against Southampton and Leeds United – both of them at home.

On their travels it’s been comprehensive defeats against Aston Villa and Manchester United whilst they also took nothing in the match against West Ham at St James’ Park on the opening day of the season.

It’s obvious to see where Newcastle are struggling. Their concession of 13 goals in five matches with no clean sheets is the biggest issue. Going forward they have actually been threatening in most of their games. The only time they have failed to find the net was at Villa Park, they’ve managed six in their other four games.

Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin remain the biggest threats. Wilson was top scorer last season in his first campaign with Newcastle scoring 12 in the Premier League and has two in three matches this term. Saint-Maximim has also scored twice following an interrupted season last time out, his best return for a campaign in the North East is three goals.

Watford vs Newcastle Betting Advice

These are two teams who many expect to be fighting to stay in the league so it makes the matches against each other all that more important. Watford know they have to be winning games against their rivals whilst the pressure begins to grow on Newcastle the longer they go without a win.

A trip to Vicarage Road is probably not what Bruce or the Newcastle supporters would have wanted due to the fact they haven’t won here in over a decade. And that was in the Championship.

Key Facts – Watford vs Newcastle Betting Tip

  • Watford failed to score in three straight games before winning 3-1 at Norwich last weekend

  • Newcastle have taken just two points from their first five games, conceding 13 goals in the process

  • The Magpies have not won at this venue since 2010 (2-1 victory in the Championship)

Watford’s pace and power up top could be the difference in this. They have had a couple of losses at home recently but their form here generally is very strong and can take care of the visitors.
