The second match in this Sunday’s Premier League double bill is a clash at The Hawthorns between bottom of the league, West Brom, and sixth placed Arsenal as the visitors will look to take advantage of the goal-shy hosts here.
West Brom’s problems in front of goal continued on Boxing Day when they were held to a dour 0-0 draw by Everton, and this became West Brom’s ninth game without hitting the back of the net this season to date – and their fourth blank at home so far amidst a home record of 1-6-3 9/14.
It’s now a disastrous run of 18 league matches without a win for The Baggies who actually started this season with back-to-back wins over Bournemouth and Burnley, but their form has dipped to alarming levels, and if new manager Alan Pardew can’t turn their fortunes around soon, he could be shown the door as well.
Visitors Arsenal secured all three points in their recent London encounter against Crystal Palace but it wasn’t all plain sailing despite being 3-1 up and apparently cruising, before Palace snatched a goal back to make it a nervy last few minutes for The Gunners.
Nevertheless, that win extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run to five matches and with just one defeat from their last nine outings overall, they’ll be confident that they can grab all three points against a woeful West Brom outfit today.
And although Arsenal’s away record isn’t entirely convincing with stats of 3-3-4 12/15, they should be able to create plenty of goalscoring opportunities in the west midlands today, especially with the return to fitness of creative midfielder, Jack Wilshire, pulling the strings in the middle of the park.
The best West Brom can hope for is a draw, but Arsenal’s quality should shine through here.
