Preview: At the London Stadium on Sunday, relegation-threatened Everton resume their search for a first Premier League away win since last August. They come up against a familiar face in that of former manager Davies Moyes, whose West Ham team can complete a first ever Premier League double over their opponents after earning a 1-0 win in the season’s reverse encounter.

West Ham – Moyes keen to exploit former club?

David Moyes remains the longest serving Everton manager in the Premier League era, with his crowning achievement a fourth place finish in the 2004-05 season. Any fondness for his former employer, however, will be put on hold on Sunday as he seeks to resurrect West Ham’s own top-four ambitions. A run of three wins in their last nine (D2 L4) having seen his side slip to seventh, six points off fourth-place Arsenal.

The Hammers have played a couple games more than the Gunners, reducing the margin for error ahead of a kind upcoming schedule. Fortunately their record on home soil is among the best in the division. Only Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City and Spurs have collected more points at home this term than West Ham (27 – W8 D3 L4), who are unbeaten across their last four league outings at the London Stadium (W3 D1).

Key Stat: The winning margin in six of West Ham’s eight Premier League home wins this season, as well as all four of their losses at the London Stadium, was a single goal.

Everton – Lampard yet to resolve away stagnation?

Before the international break, Frank Lampard secured only his second league win as Everton boss against Newcastle. It felt significant, not least against the backdrop of losing midfielder Allan in the closing stages to a harsh red card while the score was still 0-0. Alex Iwobi’s second Premier League goal of the season was celebrated wildly, and for good reason, lifting the Toffees, who remain 17th, three points clear of danger.

However, any feel good factor gained at Goodison Park was abruptly conceded at Selhurst Park as Everton were eliminated from the FA Cup in humiliating fashion, going down 4-0 at Crystal Palace. Everton are still yet to win away from home under Lampard, losing all four away games thus far by an aggregate score of 1-14. Ominously, ahead of their trek to East London, two of those were in the English capital.

Key Stat: Everton are currently on their longest winless run away from home in the Premier League (11 games; D2 L9) since a run of sixteen without an away win in 2017.

West Ham Vs Everton Betting Advice

If Everton are to end their long wait for a first away Premier League victory since August, when a 2-0 win at Brighton unknowingly preceded an 11-match winless sequence, it could very well be at West Ham. I don’t necessarily see this being the case. However, historically at least, this is a favourable fixture for the Toffees who have won more times away to the Hammers than they have any other side in the competition (12).

West Ham Vs Everton – Key Facts:

  • Sunday’s London Stadium fixture pits the team with the fifth-best home record (West Ham at home in 2021-22: W8 D3 L4) against the team with the worst away record (Everton away in 2021-22: W1 D3 L9).
  • West Ham are unbeaten in four Premier League home games, winning three. They face an Everton side which has gone 11 top-flight away matches without a win (D2 L9), losing each of their last four.
  • Five of Everton’s last six competitive away games saw Over 2.5 Goals. West Ham have scored in all 15 Premier League home games this season, netting multiple times on eight occasions.

In fact, West Ham boast a single victory across their last 13 Premier League home meetings with Everton. Yet the Hammers’ 1-0 victory on Merseyside in October sets them up nicely for their first ever Premier League double over their opponents, and I fully expect them to do so against such hapless travellers. It could easily get messy as well, as Everton come into the game off the back of 4-0 and 5-0 away losses.
