West Ham – Moyes will shuffle his pack in search of elusive win?

Thursday’s UECL outing should provide the ideal platform for West Ham to register their first win of the season, after an underwhelming start in the league. The Hammers are among three Premier League teams without a point through the first two rounds but are the only side yet to score. Declan Rice should have opened their accounts last weekend only to see his penalty saved in the 1-0 loss at Nott’m Forest.

Last season’s run to the semi-finals in the Europa League will have also whetted the appetite of fans in Europe. However, with this competition perhaps not as exciting, and with a winnable home game against Brighton to come on Sunday, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise were David Moyes to shuffle his pack. That could present a problem then, as West Ham’s home form in Europe last term was mixed: W3-D1-L2.

Key Stat: West Ham have never faced Danish opponents before in UEFA competition. Meanwhile, of their six home matches in Europe last season, only two produced Over 2.5 Goals with both these games seeing exactly three goals.

Viborg – Danish guests should be up to speed in London?

Top spot last season in Denmark’s Superliga relegation group, having finished seventh of twelve upon the completion of the regular season, earned Viborg a play-off tie against fifth-placed Aalborg to decide which of them would compete in Europe in 2022-23. That honour would go to Viborg, a club with no prior experience of competing in European competition. Not that their lack of experience has hindered them thus far.

Viborg came through two rounds to set up this glamour tie against English Premier League opposition. Manager Jacob Friss initially watched his side squeeze past Suduva, with 1-0 wins home and away, before a comfortable 5-1 aggregate victory over B36 Torshavn. Thursday’s visitors won’t lack for match sharpness, either, with this a ninth competitive outing of the season for a team sitting fifth domestically (W3-D0-L2).

Key Stat: The Danish side would only produce one attacking blank across nine competitive fixtures so far this season, although they have lost 100% of their Superliga away matches to date (L2).

West Ham Vs Viborg Betting Advice

David Moyes’ side enjoyed a run to the last four of last season’s Europa League. This competition is clearly a step down but that performance has left supporters thirsty for more of the same in the season ahead. So, while changes in personnel from the sides which failed to either of their opening two league games are to be expected, it shouldn’t be anything too drastic that they don’t win this first leg fairly comfortably.

West Ham Vs Viborg – Key Facts:

  • It is six consecutive home games without a win (D3 L3) for West Ham in all competitions, who would give up exactly two goals in each of their four previous outings at the London Stadium.
  • Viborg are enjoying their maiden campaign in Europe and boast a 100% record so far, winning all four encounters versus Suduva of Lithuania and B36 Torshavn of the Faroe Islands.
  • West Ham haven’t recorded a clean sheet at home since defeating Sevilla in the Europe League quarter-finals, a run of seven games conceding at least once. Meanwhile Viborg have found the net in 8 of their 9 competitive matches this term.

West Ham deserved more from last Sunday’s trip to the City Ground. A concern for Moyes, though, will be the amount of chances his team have conceded so far, allowing in excess of 2xGA across both league fixtures against Man City (home) and Nottingham Forest (away). Now, Viborg are a significant downgrade in quality, but are in reliable scoring form this season, netting in 8 of 9 competitive fixtures.

Match Prediction: West Ham 3-1 Viborg
