English Premier League
Pick: West Ham WIN
Odds: 11/10

Preview: Another important battle in the ongoing tussle for European qualification takes places at London Stadium. West Ham won this fixture convincingly last season and, after enduring a difficult start to the new year, are urgently in need of a similar outcome when Wolves make their way to East London.

West Ham – Hammers must arrest recent slide?

Speaking after his side’s latest result, a 1-1 draw with relegation battlers Newcastle, West Ham top scorer Michail Antonio spoke of his team-mates being in a “stale, rotten situation.” He wasn’t wrong, with that making it one win in their past five league games (D2 L2), but he could quite easily have been talking about his own form. The Jamaican international hasn’t netted in the competition since New Year’s Day.

The sight of Wolves, who beat the Hammers 1-0 earlier in the season, is unwelcome therefore. Antonio hasn’t scored a single goal across ten previous appearances versus Sunday’s opponents. And speaking of the day of the game, it is quite striking to learn that West Ham haven’t won any of their last five Premier League games played on a Sunday (D2 L3), having won five of their first seven such matches this season.

Key Stat: West Ham boast a 100% record for scoring in all 13 of their Premier League home games this season, while no team from the English top-flight has scored and conceded in as many games (17 of 26).

Wolves – Thursday’s loss to have lasting impact?

In midweek Wolves spurned the opportunity to climb above West Ham and significantly bolster their prospects of a top four finish, when losing 2-1 away to Arsenal. The fact they lost that match to a late Jose Sa own goal will have hurt, especially after taking an early lead through Hwang Hee-Chan’s first goal in 11 league appearances – losing a Premier League game they had led in for the first time since November 2018.

Bruno Lage was nevertheless satisfied with another competitive showing from his team. He can expect another against a favourite opponent of theirs. Wolves have won more Premier League games (6) against West Ham than versus any other side, and ran out deserved 1-0 winners at Molineux last November. The Arsenal loss was also just their second in nine league games (W6 D1) going back to mid-December.

Key Stat: In 13 Premier League away games this season, Wolves have earned more points (23 vs 17), won more matches (7 vs 5), and scored more goals (14 vs 10) than they have managed in 12 games at Molineux.

West Ham Vs Wolves Betting Advice

Just two points separate the sides ahead of Sunday’s London Stadium clash, although West Ham have played a game more. In the context of this season’s intriguing battle for Champions League football, you would have to say it is a must win encounter for both sets of players. It is just as well then that none of the past eight Premier League meetings ended in a draw, suggesting we will have a winner one way or another.

West Ham Vs Wolves – Key Facts:

  • Having won this exact fixture 4-0 last season, West Ham are bidding for back-to-back home league wins over Wolves having last managed the feat in October 2004.
  • However, Wolves are among the division’s most in-form sides with two defeats in their last nine (W6 D1). Conversely, West Ham boast a single win from their last five (D2 L2).
  • West Ham are reliable scorers at London Stadium though, netting in all 13 Premier League home games this term. Of their six home wins this season, only three were to nil.

Wolves did win 1-0 at Molineux in November, but it was West Ham who did the double last season including a 4-0 trouncing in this same fixture. Recent form might imply Wolves are better placed to complete a league double of their own. However, Thursday’s exertions in North London – seeing less of the ball having spent large swathes defending their own penalty box – leads me to believe the hosts can secure a priceless win.
