Wolfsburg – Wolves primed to pounce at their fortress?

The Wolves (W15 D9 L4) are breathing a little less easier in the race for Champions League qualification following last week’s developments, faltering during a thrilling round of action. A 4-3 defeat away to Eintracht Frankfurt, who moved to within a point of Oliver Glasner’s third-placed side, was compounded later that day by the team in fifth, Dortmund, winning another pulsating encounter in Stuttgart.

Consequently, the gap between third and fifth is down to eight points. A healthy enough buffer at this late stage, but one which could be eaten into further still should Wolfsburg prove unsuccessful in this latest attempt to arrest a wretched head-to-head record. Following the 2-1 loss to Bayern at Allianz Arena in December, it is now no win in eleven Bundesliga meetings (D1 L10) for the 2008/09 winners.

It is five defeats on the spin, meanwhile, since the Wolves came out on top between these sides in Lower Saxony, where they remain undefeated throughout 2020-21. That loss to Frankfurt abruptly halted their three-match winning streak. Here at Volkswagen Arena, however, they remain a formidable force, with wins in each of the last three fixtures having also held second place RB Leipzig on Matchday 16.

Bayern Munich – Wounded animal following exit from Europe?

A week they would much rather forget for Bayern (W20 D5 L3). After relinquishing a slender advantage late on in their league fixture with Union Berlin last weekend, drawing 1-1 with a side who held them to that same scoreline when they met in the German capital on Matchday 11, Hansi Flick could then only watch as his team tried in vain to come from behind in their last-eight tie with PSG in the Champions League.

Bayern exiting Europe so early, despite a 1-0 win in Paris on Tuesday, can only be seen as disastrous news for their nearest pursuer. RB Leipzig had cut the deficit to the leaders down to five points during the previous round. However the sheer fact Bayern are only defending on one front for the remainder of the campaign is likely ominous for Die Rotten Bullen’s already slim hopes of pipping Flick’s men to top spot.

That draw with Union Berlin dented Bayern’s previous good form domestically. The Bavarians reeling off five straight wins beforehand, claiming the scalps of both RB Leipzig and Dortmund in this spell. The Bundesliga champions have lost one league game in thirteen (W10 D2) – that away to high flyers Frankfurt, with three of Bayern’s five defeats in the league in 2020/21 occurring away from home.

Wolfsburg Vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

Last weekend, a much changed Bayern were held at home by Union Berlin as Wolfsburg fell to only a fourth Bundesliga defeat of the season away to Frankfurt – a tally only slightly inferior to their upcoming opponents (3). Bayern would then bow out of Europe, despite a narrow victory in Paris, compounding a disappointing and frustrating week for Hansi Flick and his depleted team, with plenty still unavailable.

Wolfsburg Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • Following Bayern Munich‘s 2-1 victory at Allianz Arena on Matchday 12, it is now eleven Bundesliga meetings without a win for Wolfsburg (D1 L10) – losing each of the last five as hosts.
  • However, Wolfsburg are one of three teams in 2020-21 yet to lose a Bundesliga home game (W9 D4), registering wins in each of their previous three such fixtures.
  • Three of the five Bundesliga defeats Bayern suffered this term were away from home, with the most recent a 2-1 scoreline at fourth place Eintracht Frankfurt.

The list of potential absentees for this trip to Wolfsburg, who are unbeaten on their own patch in the Bundesliga all season long (W9 D4), for Bayern is seemingly growing with every week that passes. Leon Goretzka recently joined the likes of Niklas Sule and Robert Lewandowski on the sidelines, making an already testing assignment this weekend all the more challenging.

I’ll therefore take the hosts, at close to even money, to pick up at least a point.
