Preview: The last time Fulham won away at Wolves in the English top-flight was way back in 1962, losing eight of ten subsequent visits. However, with both sides nursing long winless droughts, will there ever be a better time to visit Molineux for the Cottagers?

Wolves – Signs of regression clear to see?

For a club not exactly renowned for starting campaigns well – they lost their first three league games last season and had won’t any of their ten previous top-flight matches in the month of August – it probably shouldn’t have come as all that of a surprise when Wolves crashed to defeat away at Leeds on the opening weekend. Succumbing 2-1 at Elland Road despite going in front on six minutes through Daniel Podence.

That made it no league win in eight for Bruno Lage and his team, picking up two of a possible 24 points since a 2-1 home win versus Aston Villa in April. Even more concerning, however, is how the defence – now shorn of Conor Coady – has completely lost its way. The Leeds game marked the fifth occasion conceding two or more in six top-flight fixtures, having not registered a clean sheet in any of the last ten.

Key Stat: Wolves have only lost one of the 12 previous league meetings between the sides (W9 D2), winning the last three in a row all by the same 1-0 scoreline.

Fulham – Cottagers determined to end PL drought?

While Infogol’s Expected Goals model implied a degree of good fortune about last week’s result against Liverpool, anyone who watched the game for themselves were universal in their agreement that Marco Silva’s side fully merited their 2-2 draw. It says a lot when even Jurgen Klopp had to concede his team deserved a point at most. So, having quickly shown they can compete at this level, can they now go a step further?

Despite the euphoria of that result, the fact remains Fulham haven’t won a Premier League game in 11 attempts (D3 L8), since a 1-0 win at Anfield in March 2021. They do, however, appear a more cohesive unit under Silva, with Paulinha a shrewd pick up – he was demonstrably brilliant in breaking up Liverpool’s attacks – and Alexsandar Mitrovic already off the mark after some doubted his ability to score at this level.

Key Stat: Fulham haven’t won their first away game of the season in 25 of their 27 previous spells in the English top-flight (D6 L19).

Wolves Vs Fulham Betting Advice

I must admit, I was surprised when I spotted Fulham at better than 2/1 odds. I know their record at this level speaks for itself, having not won any of 11 previous games in the Premier League. However they were outstanding against Liverpool on Matchday 1. A similar level of performance would see them go close to ending their drought, against opponents who are enduring something of a crisis in confidence.

Wolves Vs Fulham – Key Facts:

  • Recent history favours a positive outcome for Wolves, who have lost only once to Fulham in their 12 previous league games (D2 L1). Moreover, Fulham last won away at Wolves in the top-flight in 1962 (D2 L8 thereafter).
  • Both teams are coming off long barren runs in the Premier League, with Wolves without a win for eight matches (D2 L6) and Fulham winless in 11 (D3 L8).
  • Fulham will fancy their chances of scoring though. Alexsandar Mitrovic has netted 45 goals in 47 league games since the start of last season and now faces a Wolves defence that hasn’t recorded a clean sheet in any of the past ten top-flight outings.

Wolves are winless for 11 Premier League games and cannot keep teams out, conceding in each of the last ten and at least twice in five of the last six. If Mitrovic was a handful – which is an understatement – for a Liverpool backline marshalled by Van Dijk, who conceded the penalty that Mitrovic scored from, then imagine how this now porous Wanderers defence will cope? I’ll take the Serb to score and Fulham not to lose.
