England to ease past the Eagles

Rugby World Cup Preview – 11.45 am kick-off

England picked up a bonus-point victory in a scrappy opener against Tonga. The performance won’t matter all that much, it was all about getting the points on the board. There will be better performances to come from the Red Rose though. Will it click for them against the Eagles?

England v USA Preview

England beat Tonga 35-3 in their opening match of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Most people would have been expecting England to post much bigger numbers than that. But after a strong start, the intensity in the second half from the Red Rose dropped away. There was a tremendous amount of handling errors that England had during the match, but they did have the bulk of possession.

There was overall, a lack of clinical finishing from them, and it was against a Tonga side who had conceded over 90 points against New Zealand in a pre-tournament warm-up. But this is competition level, and head coach Eddie Jones was happy to give some younger players a run out and a win in the pool stage is a win. They can now take a step forward from that platform built to better things.

This is the first match of the tournament for the USA. They have faced England five times before and the Americans have lost all of them. This will be the first meeting between the two nations since a 2007 clash with England winning 28-10. All of England’s victories over the USA have been by a margin of at least 18 points. The USA have won three of 25 previous World Cup matches. The Eagles have won six of the eight games played this season. The USA took a W2 DL1 record in their Pacific Nations Cup this year, beating Canada and Samoa but going down against Fiji.

England v USA Prediction

England will have to go up through the gears and they have it in them to do so. The Americans are better runners of the ball than anything, but they are unlikely to deal with the power up front that England can deliver. Three of their five previous wins over the USA have been by a margin between 26 and 30 points. An England -34 points handicap is at 10/11 for this one* (betting odds taken from bet365 on September 23rd, 2019 at 22:54)
