Estonia News and Form

The only game of Estonia’s qualification campaign so far ended in a 2-0 defeat against Northern Ireland. They don’t look to be a massive threat to Northern Ireland at all in this one, even being on home soil. Estonia have suffered five defeats in their last 10 games played and they won just three of the other five.

The wins which they did produce in that sequence of fixtures came against Greece, Finland and Gibraltar. The last two wins were both in international friendly fixtures, not competitive ones. Across their last three games played now, Estonia have managed to produce just the one goal.

That lone goal in that sequence was from their 1-0 victory over Gibraltar. Back in the Nations League Estonia did not have a good time of things. They ended up finishing bottom of their group after four defeats in six games. In their group, they were up against Finland, Hungary and Greece. Estonia only managed to score in two of those six fixtures. It was never to be expected that they were going to be a huge threat in this Euro 2020 qualification group.

Northern Ireland News and Form

So it is two wins from two for Northern Ireland so far in Euro 2020 qualification. The wins that the Irish were on home soil over Estonia and Belarus. In facing up to Estonia again, it is so important for Northern Ireland’s qualification hopes that they continue to take maximum points from these easier games. Things are going to get a lot tougher for them down the road because they still have meetings with Germany and the Netherlands to come. So in no way shape or form can the Irish afford to drop points in games like this. The wins that they have picked up a the start of this qualification campaign saw them shake off some less than ideal form.

They were W1 D1 L4 in their six games prior to the start of Euro 2020 qualification. Back in the Nations League they did not get a single point on the board from their four games and only produced a two goals from their fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria. Northern Ireland, of course, are not a free-scoring side at all, and they do rely on their defensive output. They have picked up a clean sheet in three of their last six games played. This is going to be a slightly trickier game away from home against Estonia than it was back in Belfast, but still, at the end of the day, it should be a fixture in which Northern Ireland can push on for three points.
