Can Exeter build on positive start?

The Chiefs put in a commanding performance out at La Rochelle last weekend, banking a 31-12 victory over the French side. They were always well in control of the game, with Sam Simmonds starring for them with a try, four conversions and a penalty. The margin of victory looked as if it was going to be even bigger but their French opponents touched down in the final minute of the match. Still, it was a positive bonus point away win for Exeter.

Now they head back to Sandy Park to take on Glasgow this weekend. Exeter have suffered a loss in their European home opener of a season, just once in their last five campaigns (W3 D1). They have tremendous home form, and have been leading at half time in seven of their last ten European home matches (D2 L1). Exeter managed to keep their opponents La Rochelle off the scoreboard in the first half of their match last weekend, only two other sides managed that in the first round of action, Glasgow was one of them (Northampton).

Can Glasgow cause an upset at Sandy Park?

Glasgow held off the challenge of Sale in their opening match in this season’s competition over the Sale Sharks. The Warriors posted a nervy 13-7 success in the match, putting all of their points on the board in the first half of the fixture. They had to hold on a bit when Sale got their try with twenty minutes to play. They are naturally heading to Sandy Park as underdogs and they have taken just two wins in their last 22 away games (L20) against English Premiership sides.

One of those two victories did happen at Exeter, but that was back in the 2013/14 season. But then Glasgow do have the head to head form going over the Chiefs. However, on the evidence of the first round of action of this season’s competition, it’s unlikely that the Warriors are going to pack enough of an attacking punch to bring down the Chiefs. Hanging on to get a bonus point in defeat may be something of a win for the Scottish side.

Exeter v Glasgow Predictions

It has to be Exeter all the way in this one. Glasgow have managed to keep it tight against the Chiefs in all four of their previous meetings. So it may be worth backing a narrow margin of success for the home side cropping up. It’s going to be a long afternoon defensively for Glasgow. Home win.
