The fifteenth ranking tournament of the snooker season will be played on the weekend. The Gibraltar Open starts on Friday March 13th and is settled on Sunday 15th, so it’s a short one.

Following this there will only be the Tour Championship even in Wales to come later in the month before the 2020 World Championships. So the Gibraltar Open is a big one in terms of players finding their form.

Bingham lines up a title defence

The reigning Gibraltar Open champion is Stuart Bingham who beat Ryan Day 4-1 in last year’s final. Bingham is a big 14/1 poke to defend his title* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 18:30 GMT on Monday, 9th March 2020).

Bingham’s big moment of the season came with his Masters victory, which was totally out of the blue. When it comes to ranking tournaments in the 2019/20 snooker season, he has been to the quarter finals of one event only and none of his last six.

Interestingly, the man Bingham beat in last year’s Final, Ryan Day had been the reigning champion.

Can Trump secure his sixth ranking title of the season?

The two best players of the season, Judd Trump and Neil Robertson are the frontrunners for success in Gibraltar Open 2020 betting.

Trump got yet another ranking title success on the board recently, winning the Players Championship. He is the 3/1 favourite for the Gibraltar Open 2020* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 18:30 GMT on Monday, 9th March 2020)

That was Trump’s fifth ranking title in what has been a remarkable season for him. He will be entering the main draw of the Gibraltar Open for just the second time in his career. He made the losing finalist on his debut in 2017.

Robertson aiming for third ranking title of 2019/20

Neil Roberston has won two of the last five ranking events, also reaching another final in that sequence. Throw in his non-ranking Champion of Champions victory and it’s been a stellar season by the Australian.

Like Trump, this is Roberston’s second appearance at the Gibraltar Open, having reached the quarter finals on his debut in 2017.

The way the draw is set up, there is the potential of a Trump v Robertson semi final, which would be fascinating.

Robertson is the 10/3 second favourite in Gibraltar Open 2020 betting* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 18:30 GMT on Monday, 9th March 2020).

Betvictor European Series decider

There’s an extra spice on this event as Robertson leads the BetVictor European Series rankings. This is the final of the four events in the BetVictor European Series (European Masters, German Masters, Snooker Shoot Out and Gibraltar Open).

The winner of the series (highest prize money earner) claims a huge bonus of £150,000.

Robertson won the European Masters, before losing to Trump in the German Masters Final. Both skipped the Snooker Shoot-Out. Roberston leads the series with £115,00 amassed and Trump behind at £80,000.

The winner of the Griabaltor Open gets £50,000 which counts towards the Series.

Key Facts – Gibraltar Open Snooker Betting Tip

  • Stuart Bingham is the reigning Gibraltar Open Champion
  • This will be just the fifth edition of the Gibraltar Open
  • Ryan Day has reached the last two Gibraltar Open Finals (W1 L1)

Selby search for form improvement

The last ranking title that Mark Selby collected was the Scottish Open in December. He has been far less of a threat in action since then, his best efforts being two quarter-final places in his last five ranking events.

So ahead of the World Championships, Selby needs a boost. His one previous appearance in the Gibraltar Open was in 2017 when he was a third-round loser.

Selby is the 11/5 favourite to win the second quarter of the draw where the main opposers are Mark Williams, Stephen Maguire and Yan Bingtao* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 18:30 GMT on Monday, 9th March 2020).

The draw

1st Quarter Seeds: Stuart Bingham, Kyren Wilson, David Gilbert, Gary Wilson
2nd Quarter Seeds: Mark Williams (4), Mark Selby (5), Stephen Maguire (12), Yan Bingtao (13)
3rd Quarter Seeds: Neil Robertson (3), John Higgins (6), Jack Lisowski (13), Joe Perry (14)
4th Quarter Seeds: Judd Trump (2), Mark Allen (7), Barry Hawkins (10), Ali Carter (15)

The Chasing Pack

There are a clutch of players sitting around the 14/1 mark in Gibraltar Open 2020 betting* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 18:30 GMT on Monday, 9th March 2020).

Included in that are Kyren Wilson, John Higgins, David Gilbert and the reigning champion Stuart Bingham who we have already mentioned. Interestingly, Gilbert, Wilson and Bingham are all stuck together in the first quarter of the draw.

As expected there, there isn’t much to choose between them all in the To Win 1st Quarter betting market.

Gilbert, who hasn’t been past the second round in any of his last four ranking appearances just shades the quarter betting at 3/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 18:30 GMT on Monday, 9th March 2020). The Englishman was a losing quarter-finalist at last year’s renewal.

Predictions & Tips

For sheer entertainment view, hopefully, things boil down to that projected semi-final of Trump v Robertson. Trump is well back in the zone still after his recent Players Championship success.

He would get the nod as the pick to win the Gibraltar Open, as Robertson was a first-round loser at that event. The head to head between Trump and Roberston is 12-8 in favour of Trump, who has won three of the last four meetings.

He is going to be the one to beat on the Rock over the weekend.
