What the bookmakers are saying ahead of Euro 2016

Euro Betting

So who is it going to be? Who will walk off with the crown of being European Champions on July 10th at the culmination of Euro 2016? Twenty four teams will be entering the fray and only the one will be left standing at the Stade de France when the final whistle of the tournament is blown. The big money is in the pre-match outright winner market because if you call the winner now before the tournament starts whittling down its numbers then you are going to be in with a shot at some big profit and some big bragging rights as well. So what are each nation’s odds to win Euro 2016? Let’s take a look and the odds and chances of the major players.

Who will win the Euro 2016? Odds & Prediction

The general consensus is that the main front runners are France, Germany and Spain heading into Euro 2016. Spain of course have the proven track record at the last two editions, Germany are the reigning world champions and France have home advantage. So who will win win the Euro 2016 championship this summer?

Germany and France are joint outright favourites at a price of 10/3 with online betting site Bet365 and they are followed by Spain at 11/2. Here is how we are breaking down and looking at the tournament this summer.

Spain odds to win Euro 2016

Spain don’t quite have the punch up front to potentially make it a historic third European Championship title on the bounce, Diego Costa hasn’t been a good fit, leaving the responsibility on the shoulders of young Paco Alcacer. They should be in the mix near the end, but will that lack of a world class striker hurt them? That is really the question mark about them adn they have left qualifying top scorer Paco Alcacer out of the squad too. You know what you are going to get from Spain, a lot of possession and patience. But the thing with them is that they don’t have a Plan B up their sleeve if someone is able to dig in there and keep them at bay. Those are the question marks over the reigning champions heading to the tournament so Spain odds to win Euro 2016 at 11/2 probably doesn’t have quiet enough appeal..

Germany odds to win Euro 2016

Germany should be there or thereabouts of course, but you have to be concerned over their defensive issues. They haven’t looked a cohesive defensive unit since the changes came after having won the 2010 FIFA World Cup. They have struggled for clean sheets since then and while they have quality in most departments, they are lacking the back four and that could hurt them at some point.

That was highlighted in qualification defeats against Poland and Ireland and while the Germans still won their group, it showed some vulnerabilities that they have and other teams can focus in on that and get at that. Still, Thomas Muller looks a great shot to win the Golden Boot at Euro 2016, but are Germany odds to win Euro 2016 a little too short?

France odds to win Euro 2016

So France at 10/3 is the top of our odds and prediction for Euro 2016 betting. They look calm, confident and have the extra home support which could carry them through. They won the tournament the last time they hosted it as well and of the main contenders, they have the most pieces in places in terms of being a well-rounded squad. They have big strength in the middle, flashes of brilliance up front, a world class keeper and a tough, yet mobile back line.

France odds to win Euro 2016 are running at that 10/3 price and that’s the value where they should be taken up ahead of the tournament. They have posted some good international friendly victories over the last twelve months or so and look to be well on track to make a solid assault on the tournament, even without suspended striker Karim Benzema. If their mentality is right, they can deliver.

Those are the big guns in the mix and then you start getting into the longer priced competitors like England, Italy and Belgium. England odds to win Euro 2016 are sat at 17/2 and they haven’t been trading all that badly ahead of the summer tournament. The Three Lions put in a commanding qualification display, winning all ten of their matches, but the level of opposition is going to be upped greatly down the line if they are going to go on and claim the title.

There are major concerns over England’s back line as well, which looks far from convincing. The Three Lions have enough in the attack to contend, through the likes of Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane, but will their back line hold against higher-classed opponents? That’s a big concern for Roy Hodgson’s men but they are heading into the tournament, dare we say it, looking more promising than they have been at any other international tournament for some time.

Belgium odds to win Euro 2016 which are 11/1 have probably gone a little unnoticed. The Red Devils failed to really ignite and get their act together at the 2010 World Cup after such a good qualification campaign. That tournament perhaps came a little too early for them in their rising development. But are they in a better position this time around? The Belgians were solid enough in qualification, losing just the one game (against Wales) and they shipped just the five goals along the way. The fitness of Vincent Kompany and Eden Hazard could be crucial to them, but they have a lot of quality players in a lot of positions to warrant them getting at least to the quarter finals.

What of the runners up from four years ago? Italy were hammered 4-0 in the Euro 2012 final by Spain and Italy odds to win Euro 2016 are out at 10/1. They were unbeaten in qualification but they didn’t exactly catch fire in front of goal in a group where there should have been a decent return on offer from them. Italy netted just 16 goals in their ten games. They can be a nuisance to the top sides on their day, but they lack a little pace and punch going forward and will have to rely on their pragmatic approach to make any progress in the tournament.

Can Cristiano Ronaldo carry his country to succeed? It that unfair to put the hopes of a nation on one man’s shoulders? Probably not, not when it’s his sizable shoulders. Portugal odds to win Euro 2016 are at 20/1 and that says a lot about them. They aren’t likely going to be able to compete with the major players if it comes down to it at the business end of the competition, but with the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo, they could spring a surprise here and there. Long shots though as are everyone longer priced than them, starting with Croatia at 33/1. Austria perhaps at 40/1 are the big dark horses of the tournament. They topped their qualification group ahead of Russia and Sweden and with a nice draw for the Euro 2016 finals, they could well be value for a quarter final berth.
