Spain U21 News and Form

The Spaniards started this tournament with a defeat. Looking back at how they have responded, maybe that was the catalyst to getting them up and running so well. Spain are back in the final of the U21 Championships for the fourth time in the last five editions now. That’s such amazing consistency from them. In their opening game, Spain lost 2-0 to hosts Italy. Their qualification hopes looked in trouble as they were only 1-1 with Belgium in the dying minutes of their second game. However, Pablo Fornals got a late winner and the Spaniards have not looked back since then.

They rounded off their group action with a 5-0 drubbing of Poland which was enough to get the top spot on goal difference after having finished level on points with Poland and Italy. So that group stage success put them against France in the semifinals. France qualified as the best runner up from the first round of action. Spain turned on the style again as they produced a 4-1 win over France and that was after having conceded first. Spain have five different players sat on two goals in the tournament.

The Spaniards have now won 17 of their last 20 matches at the Finals (D1 L2). Their loss to Germany in the 2017 final snapped a 21 match unbeaten streak of form that they were on in the finals of the U21 European Championships. In their last 25 European Championship games (which does include qualification matches) Spain are W19 D3 L3. Spain have now scored at least five goals in four of their last 11 matches. Form their seven competitive fixtures against Germany at this level, Spain are 4-2 ahead.

Germany U21 News and Form

The Germans have looked so impressive at this tournament and they haven’t been showing any signs of feeling the pressure as defending champions. To start with they opened with a 3-1 win over Denmark and then they turned up and smashed six goals past Serbia. They just needed a point out of their final group stage game against Austria to finish as group winners and that is exactly what they got. At that point, they were able to reserve something for the knockout stages.

They took on Romania in the semifinals and took a 4-2 win over them. Romania has surprised by winning their group ahead of England and France and were looking a real scoring threat. Romania had been 2-1 up at one stage, but couldn’t hold out. Three of Germany’s four goals in the game came from set pieces. Luca Waldschmidt struck twice in the game, taking his tournament tally to seven goals. He is the top scorer.

Four of the five of the goals that Germany have conceded at the tournament have been from the penalty spot. Germany will likely be a little concerned about the fact that they have been struggling for clean sheets. They don’t have one in any of their last seven fixtures now. But they have looked so good in attack that they can get away with conceding. No team scored more goals in qualifications than the 33 Germany managed. They are W6 D2 L1 in their last nine games at the Euro U21 Championships.

Spain U21 v Germany U21 Predictions

Germany U21 to win: There probably is not going to be much between the two nations again as they square off for top honours. Hopefully this year’s final is a lot more open than the one from two years ago was. Both have plenty of goals in them and both have them have shown some vulnerabilities at the back. Tough game to call, but Germany have looked good enough to handle themselves in a title defence.
