Table of Contents
Last season was a huge disappointment for Aberdeen. The appointment of Stephen Glass in 2021 proved to be an unmitigated disaster and despite opting to replace Glass with Jim Goodwin at the beginning of this year, performances and results got worse rather than better. The Dons eventually missed out on the top six which would have been the minimum they would expect at the start of the season, so it was no surprise to see such a big turnover in players.
Goodwin has transformed the squad with the introduction of six new players already, four of whom made their debut in the weekend win over Peterhead. There have been some notable departures as well, though, with Lewis Ferguson and Calvin Ramsey leaving the club and bringing in significant sums of money which will no doubt allow the manager to strengthen further.
Dumbarton Preview – Can Dumbarton stun their hosts and get their first points of the campaign?
Relegation via the playoffs means Dumbarton are playing in League Two for the first time since 2009. It seems inevitable for a while, however, with one disappointing season following another – eventually culminating in them dropping to the lowest level of the SPFL.
The club have kept with Stevie Farrell who only took over as manager back in May 2021. The former Stranraer boss can look forward to a couple of visits to Links Park – the stadium in which he managed for four years before moving to the Sons.

A 2-1 defeat at home to fellow League Two club Stirling Albion was hardly the start to the competition or season as a whole that Dumbarton would have wanted. And the score line probably hides the fact they were much inferior, only managing a consolation in the last five minutes.
Incredibly, that was Dumbarton’s 12th straight defeat in the League Cup. The last time they won a game was back in 2019 and that is their only success in the last 15. It hardly inspires confidence they can take anything from this match as they stare down the barrel of another bottom place finish.
Aberdeen vs Dumbarton Betting Advice
This looks like a mismatch on paper and it is hard to see anything other than an Aberdeen win. Goodwin knows he needs to get off to a fast start in this season following the disappointment of last, so facing a lacklustre Dumbarton team just days after dismantling League One side Peterhead is about as soft a beginning as he could have hoped for.
The Dons will face Stirling Albion before completing the group stage with the visit of Raith Rovers. Anything less than a top place finish would be seen as a very underwhelming effort.
