Dundee are favourites for this season’s Championship and they prepare to face last season’s runners up, Arbroath, in what should be a good indicator of where both teams are in these early stages.

Dundee Preview – Will the Dark Blues on their first win of the season last weekend?

A lot has happened at Dens Park since they last played at this level, and that was just a couple of years ago. The manager who got them there – James McPake – was surprisingly sacked at the beginning of the calendar year and replaced by Mark McGhee, which was an even bigger surprise. A terrible run of form resulted in them being relegated and McGhee being relieved of his duties. Gary Bowyer, formerly of Blackburn Rovers and Salford, has been appointed with the task of getting the Dark Blues back to the Premiership.

It has been an encouraging start overall. Dundee qualified from their League Cup section to reach the knockout stages and have a home tie against lower league opposition to look forward to at the end of the month.

Dundee did lose their opening league match of the season, though, which would have given them something of a reality check. They were 3-0 down to Partick Thistle at home but did mount a comeback to eventually lose 3-2. It made last weekend’s game away to Raith Rovers even more important so Josh Mulligan providing the only goal of the game was very welcome for Bowyer.
In what is virtually the same squad of players from the one who got relegated, Zach Robinson is one of the new faces. The young attacker joined from Wimbledon in the summer and has started both league matches. He remains in search of his first goal.

Arbroath Preview – After two draws to open the season, will Arbroath record a first victory?

It was nearly the most dramatic of fairytales for Arbroath and their manager Dick Campbell last season. The only part-time club playing at this level came within a game of winning the league and playing in the top-flight for the first time in their history. As it was, the concession of two second half goals in their penultimate game away to Kilmarnock proved their undoing.

Arbroath were then knocked out on penalties by Inverness Caley Thistle in the semi-final of the promotion playoffs and were left wondering what could have been.

There will be plenty who argue that they have missed their chance but Campbell will feel they can have another campaign where they defy expectation. Arbroath are also in the last-16 of the League Cup and will face Partick, having won all four of their group matches.

They head into their third league game of the season still in search of their first win, though, and still looking for their first goal. A pair of 0-0 draws away to Ayr and then at home to Caley. It would be just like them to get off the mark away to the league favourites and with the game live on TV.

Dundee vs Arbroath Betting Advice

If Dundee don’t finish in the top four come the end of the season then something has gone seriously wrong. For Abroath, the playoffs would be another terrific achievement but that is also the expectation they have set now. Either way, there is plenty that intrigues about this game.

It was the Dark Blues who had the better of these fixtures a couple of seasons back. Going unbeaten in that campaign, winning two – both of which were at home.

Key Facts –  Dundee vs Arbroath Betting Tip

  • Dundee lost their opening game of the season at home to Partick before a 1-0 success at Raith
  • Arbroath have shared the points with both Inverness and Ayr United so far this campaign
  • Both of these teams will expect to be involved in the promotion chase

Arbroath are one of the best organised teams at this level so it is likely to be close. However, Dundee just have more firepower in attack and that could prove the difference.
