Neither St Johnstone or Hibernian would have been happy with their season’s last time around so the motivation to get this campaign off to a winning start is even greater.

St Johnstone Preview – Can Saints banish the memory of last season by winning on the opening day?

Although St Johnstone ended up comfortably winning the relegation playoff final against Inverness Caley back in May, it was still too close for comfort for a club who had won both domestic cups in the season previous, incidentally beating Saturday’s opponents in the Scottish Cup back in 2020. Callum Davidson had not dealt with the criticism and scrutiny as manager until the last campaign and he continues to be under the microscope with Saints failing to progress to the knockout stages of the League Cup – unable to get the better of League One and League Two teams.

The fans continue to show their unhappiness and Davidson knows he will need a good start to the league campaign in order to alter that.

Goals are once again likely to be a problem for Saints, as they have been for the past few seasons. They have averaged less than a goal a game in each of the last two seasons, with only a paltry 24 last season. Callum Hendry – who was top scorer last season on eight goals – has moved to Salford in the summer.
At the other end of the pitch, Remi Matthews joined the club this week as the replacement for another big name who has departed. Zander Clark was at the club for over 11 years but has opted for a new adventure.

Hibernian Preview – Will Hibs put their League Cup struggles behind them?

Just when Hibs fans feel they can start looking forward to a new era with (yet another) new manager, they are faced with yet more drama off the park and disappointment on it. Playing the ineligible Rocky Bushiri in a League Cup game seen them deducted points and – mixed with poor performances – resulted in them failing to reach the knockout stages of a competition which they would have targeted.

Lee Johnson made his own feelings known about both of those issues, but now has to focus on what is squad filled with a lot of new faces on the task at hand. And that’s getting three points from their visit to Perth.

Johnson has certainly been supported in the transfer market with Marijan Cabraja’s arrival taking them up to 10 new players for the summer. It will clearly take a bit of time for them to gel and get the best fit for the squad they have, but the manager will also be aware he’s taking over a club who have been struggling all of last season.

Hibs have one of the bigger budgets in the division so finishing in the bottom six – as they did last season – is not something they can suffer again.

St Johnstone vs Hibernian Betting Advice

These teams played each other four times last season. Hibs were unbeaten come the end of the season, winning three of them. Saints managed just one goal across the four games. Despite that famous 1-0 win at Hampden 14 months ago, it’s not a fixture they have performed well in more recently.

One man who will be hoping to change that is Jamie Murphy. He moved from Hibs to Saints in the summer.

Key Facts –  St Johnstone vs Hibernian Betting Tip

  • St Johnstone defeated Inverness Caley Thistle in last season’s relegation playoff to preserve their Premiership status
  • Lee Johnson is the new man in the Hibs’ dugout as they look to forgot their bottom six finish
  • Both of these clubs have already been knocked out the League Cup following disappointing group stage performances

Neither of these teams have gotten off to the start they would have hoped for, making this game even more important. With Saints looking likely to struggle in front of goal again and Hibs having the look of a new and unsettled side, this game may be short of entertainment. Back under 2.5 goals.
