Arbroath Preview – Will Arbroath continue their excellent run and take top spot in the process?

The job that Dick Campbell has done during his five years at Arbroath has been incredible. Achieving promotion courtesy of winning the League Two and One titles in three seasons led them to the second tier of Scottish football in 2019. As a part-time club competing against full-time outfits with much bigger resources was always going to be difficult but they have taken it in their stride. They finished fifth in the first campaign, missing out on the playoffs by five points, before a seventh place finish last season.

To emphasise how difficult it is for part-time teams to stay at this level Alloa – who were promoted the same season as Arbroath – have now returned to League One after two seasons whilst Arbroath continue to be as competitive as ever.

(odds taken 2000 GMT, Wednesday 22 September)

Six games into the league campaign and Arbroath have won four and drawn one. It’s a much better start to last season where they managed only two points from their first six matches and will give them confidence they can stick around the top end of the table.

Few teams depart Gayfield Park with all three points but Inverness actually won there on the opening weekend. Arbroath have responded well by beating both Partick Thistle and Hamilton since then and scoring seven goals in the process. They’ve now won seven of their last 13 at home and lost just three.

Kilmarnock Preview – Are Killie set to show why they are title favourites with an important away win?

Relegation from the Premiership was never on the agenda for Kilmarnock last season and their performances in the playoffs against Dundee were bordering on pathetic. However, it provided an opportunity for Tommy Wright to reset things, bring in his own players and attempt to build a new winning culture that leads Killie back to the top-flight.

Kilmarnock came into this season as the outright favourites to win the title but it’s unlikely to be a runaway success going by what we’ve seen so far. Kilmarnock are second in the Championship coming into this game, one point behind leaders Inverness.

Killie’s only defeat and dropped points in the league this season was against Inverness in a 1-0 loss at Rugby Park. They have responded to that with wins against Morton and Partick in the league whilst also seeing off Falkirk in the Challenge Cup.

The match against Falkirk is the first time Killie have scored more than two goals in a game this season which gives an indication of how pragmatic this team are. Wright has got them very well organised defensively, however, with just that one goal against Inverness shipped in the Championship.  It means Killie have won three of their away games in the league so far without conceding a goal.

Arbroath vs Kilmarnock Betting Advice

Not many would have expected this one to be a top of the table clash but that’s testament to how good Arbroath have been in the early stage of the season. The two teams have one thing in common in that their only defeat so far this season has come against the same team – Inverness.

The carrot for both Arbroath and Kikmarnock is whoever wins will go top of the table until the games on Saturday.

Key Facts – Arbroath vs Kilmarnock Betting Tip

  • Arbroath have picked up 11 points this season compared to the same stage last season
  • Kilmarnock have won all three away games in the league and yet to concede a goal in the process
  • The winner of this match will move to the top of the table ahead of Saturday’s fixtures

We know how good Kilmarnock are in defence and their concession of one goal in six games proves that. With their opponents also keeping six clean sheets in their last 10 home matches in the league this is bound to be a low-scoring affair. Take under 2.5 goals.
