BSC Glasgow Preview – Can minnows BSC cause a massive upset and knockout Premiership rivals?

This year’s Scottish Cup has already been a huge success for BSC Glasgow who have not even been going for 10 years. Playing in the Lowland League, BSC are essentially playing in a fifth tier of Scottish football. Unsurprisingly, due to their league placing and infancy of being, this is the first time BSC have reached this stage of the competition.

In order to have a chance of reaching League Two BSC would have to win their league and enter into the playoffs. They are currently 11 points behind Kelty Hearts who lead the Lowland League but do have a couple of games in hand.

 

BSC’s participation in this year’s Scottish Cup started back in October and they have had to negotiate three ties in order to reach this stage. Lochee United (second round) and East Kilbride were fellow non-league clubs who they got the better of.

The biggest scalp on their run to date was East Fife of League One. BSC won an enthralling seven goal thriller with a goal in added time to cause a big upset. What was even more impressive is they were 3-1 down in the game in the second half but able to mount remarkable comeback.

Hibernian Preview – Will Hibernian’s class prove telling and they can negotiate this tie to move into the quarter-finals?

It’s been a stop start season for Hibs in the context of their league campaign so the Scottish Cup represents a big opportunity for some relief and potentially even some success. Jack Ross’ men suffered their first defeat of 2020 when going down 2-1 to Rangers in midweek but they remain in sixth spot and looking even less likely to challenge for third than they were coming back from the winter break.

It remains one league win in five games for Hibs which isn’t good enough for a team who big things were expected both at the start of the season and when Ross was brought in as manager in November.

The Easter Road club required a replay to get beyond Championship leaders Dundee United in the previous round – two ties which featured 10 goals in toal, six of which were for Hibs. It highlighted the good and bad aspects of this team but Ross will be very much expecting that his defence stands up better to BSC’s attack than it has on a number of occasions in league and cup action to date.

The Hibs’ supporters don’t have to venture too far back for the last time they tasted success in this competition having won the Scottish Cup in 2016.

 

I fully expect Hibs to advance to the quarter-finals with something to spare here. The game is being played on Championship club Alloa’s stadium so there should be no issue in terms of the surface.

Considering it’s been a shaky start to the year this is a match where Hibs can try to make a statement and I’m taking them to score at least four goals. This was the number they put past Dundee United in their replay and in Christian Doidge they have a striker in form (six goals in six matches).
