Cove Rangers Preview – Can Cove Rangers upset Championship opponents and get first win?

Cove Rangers achieved their long-term ambition by being promoted to the league set-up in Scotland. The club have spent big over recent years to earn it and had come close the season before only to lose out in the playoff final. There were no mistakes this time around, however, as they stormed past Berwick Rangers at the same stage to win 7-0 on aggregate. They are once again fancied to be challenging at the top of League Two due to their spending power and ambition, despite only being promoted. It was not the ideal start they were hoping for this season, though, as they lost 2-1 to Peterhead. That opponent are from the league above but the standard goes up again on Wednesday when Dundee visit.

Dundee Preview – Will Dundee build on weekend win and grab another victory?

It’s all change at Dens Park this season following their relegation to the Championship. Former captain James McPake was given the job on a permanent basis having took charge of the last game of the season. A promising coach at youth level, it’s a big ask for McPake to assume this responsibility and lead the club back to the top-flight. The club have recognised this and brought in former Scotland manager Gordon Strachan as a support to the young manager. Strachan began his playing career at the club and obviously has an emotional attachment. His experience will be invaluable as Dundee aim to bounce straight back following that relegation disappointment. It could barely have been a better start for the new management team at the weekend with a 3-0 win away to Raith Rovers.

The promising Andrew Nelson scored twice in that 3-0 win. Big things are expected of the striker who suffered from injury in the second half of last season.

Key-Facts – Cove Rangers v Dundee

  • Dundee suffered a disappointment relegation last season but they looked a different side when coasting to a 3-0 win in their opening League Cup game
  • Big things are expected of Andrew Nelson this season and he started with a purpose scoring twice in Dundee’s opening win

Cove Rangers v Dundee Betting Advice

Cove have participated in two League Cup campaigns since the competition was reformatted in 2016. It’s been a struggle for them to make an impact as a non-league side. Their previous eight games before this season had yielded only two wins. That’s no surprise considering the gap between the two levels but Saturday’s loss is a reality check. Their opponents on Wednesday will be hoping to inflict more misery on them and highlight how big the gap is between the two leagues.

The hosts are well equipped to make an impact at League Two level but this might be a step up too far. McPake and Strachan have been talking about a fast start for Dundee and they got that on Saturday. They are big favourites to get another win but the odds are short. Instead, over 2.5 goals looks like a sound bet. The form of Nelson is a positive one for it whilst Cove carry a threat. Being at home will give them belief to take the game to their opponents, too.
