Results at the weekend mean Dundee are just one point behind Tayside rivals St Johnstone as the two prepare to meet at Dens Park on Wednesday.

Dundee Preview – Can Dundee follow up Saturday’s win with another three points?

Teams promoted via the playoffs are inevitably going to be amongst the favourites for relegation and Dundee were no different. The reality is they find themselves exactly in that position as they sit second bottom of the Premiership – ironically enough in the spot which would see them contest a second consecutive playoff to continue playing in the top-flight. There’s a long way to go until the end of the season, though, and if they can find more performances like the one on Saturday then they could begin pulling away from relegation trouble.

A 3-0 win at home to Motherwell is up there with the best they have produced this season and it could have been an even bigger margin of victory. The challenge for James McPake and his players is to follow that up.

Dundee have struggled with that having failed to win two consecutive matches in the league thus far. Not altogether surprising considering the position they’re in and having won just three games in the Premiership all season (just two of them at home).

What’s particularly interesting is that their two wins at Dens Park have come against top six sides. It’s teams in and around them they have struggled to get the better of. McPake knows that will have to change if they are to give themselves the best chance for survival.

St Johnstone Preview – Are Saints set to continue excellent record in this fixtrue?

The highs of last season for St Johnstone are beginning to fade pretty quickly. Double cup winners and a top six finish was never going to be matched but many expected Saints to push on in the league and challenge for European football. As it is, their concerns are more pressing at the foot of the table.

Callum Davidson’s men are just four points off bottom club Ross County, picking up only one win in their last six league games. They’ve also lost their first domestic up match in nearly two years with a narrow defeat to Celtic last weekend.

Despite taking the lead at home to Hibs on Saturday it ended in another loss having gone down to 10 men in the first half. It’s those situations which will frustrate the manager with his team having gotten into a winning position.

Goals have been a problem for the Perth team since Davidson took over. They are yet to reach double figures with nine in 14 games. That’s the lowest in the division. Their six away matches have also produced a staggeringly low total of five goals. To put that into context, the second lowest total of goals in a team’s away games is their next opponents who have seen 15 in scored in six matches.

Dundee vs St Johnstone Betting Advice

This may not be Dundee’s biggest rivalry but it’s still a big match in their season. The visit of St Johnstone on Wednesday will be particularly important as it’s a chance for them to go above Saints. The visitors will not be contemplating that, however, and will instead be looking above, knowing that a win could see them rise to seventh and that would be with a game in hand over a lot of the teams around them.

It’s a fixture which Saints have dominated in recent times. They are looking for an eighth straight win against Dundee.

Key Facts – Dundee vs St Johnstone Betting Tip

  • Dundee are looking for their first consecutive victories in the league this season
  • St Johnstone’s six away matches have produced just five goals in total
  • Saints have won the last seven meetings between the two teams

The teams may be coming into this game on the back of contrasting results but it’s St Johnstone who get the nod here. Their record is excellent against Dundee who have been very inconsistent at home this season. Saints have gotten themselves into good positions in recent times without getting the results but I’m taking them to get over the line.
