Faroe Islands – Hosts to fall short of maiden victory?

The Faroe Islands produced a respectable nine points from their ten qualifiers during the last FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, but were cannon fodder in Euro 2020 qualifying as they finished joint-last, alongside Malta, having lost all but one of ten encounters in an admittedly competitive section. Gibraltar, Liechtenstein and San Marino were the only teams to ship more goals on average than their three a game.

Unfortunately for the North Atlantic nation, it has been more of the same so far in 2022 World Cup qualifying. Hakan Hansson’s side sit second-last in Group F, the 1-1 draw away in Moldova all they have to show for after 3-1 and 4-0 losses in Austria and Scotland, respectively. In June, however, they did end a seven-match winless spell (D3 L4) in emphatic fashion, thumping Liechtenstein 5-1 in Tórshavn.

Key Stat: Since the beginning of 2017, all but one of the Faroe Islands’ eight victories came when playing as the designated home side.

Israel – Three points in Torshavn a must?

With a full quota of points, the Danes are already shaping as though they may run away with the sole automatic qualifying berth in Group F. That leaves a three-way duel for second place between Austria (4 points), Israel (4) and Scotland (5). The outcomes of those match-ups are likely to prove key, but only if they can avoid costly slip ups, making Wednesday’s trip to the Faroe Islands crucial for the Israelis.

After opening in disappointing, if not entirely surprising, fashion with a 2-0 loss at home to Denmark – easily the strongest team in this section – Israel responded by taking four of the next six points. A hard-fought 1-1 draw at home with Scotland preceding a 4-1 thrashing of Moldova in Chisinau. Encouragingly, they have put up 2+ goals in three of their past four away outings, all in wins (vs Moldova, Montenegro and Slovakia).

Key Stat: Each of Israel’s last three matches have seen four or more goals.

Faroe Islands Vs Israel Betting Advice

Quite simply Israel cannot afford to be dropping points against the likes of the Faroe Islands. The battle for second spot in Group F is set to go down to the wire. Therefore three points are imperative for Israel in Torshavn, where they emerged 2-0 victors on their only previous visit sixteen years ago for a World Cup qualifier. The visitors are a short price to comply once more and should have little bother doing so.

Faroe Islands Vs Israel – Key Facts:

  • These countries are meeting for the first time in more than 15 years. Israel won both prior engagements, however, winning 2-0 on their only previous visit to Faroe Islands.
  • The Faroe Islands have scored in four of the past five home internationals while Israel are currently without a clean sheet in their past five away matches.
  • Each of Israel’s past three away victories seen them score at least three times but also concede on at least one occasion.

The Faroe Islands leaked 30 goals in 10 games during their most recent qualifying campaign, Euro 2020. They are already up to eight this time around, shipping three and four to Austria and Scotland respectively. This augurs well for another routine Israel victory. The Blue and Whites are coming off three wins in four away internationals, scoring at least three times in each victory, so should ease to three points.
