Hibs top their section but still have work to do to guarantee qualification, so will be targeting three points against a Greenock Morton team who have one point from two matches.

Hibernian Preview – Can Hibs take another step towards the knockout phase with a win here?

As has been the case a number of times in recent years, this feels very much like a fresh beginning for Hibs following the arrival of Lee Johnson as manager. Johnson replaces Shaun Maloney who was barely in charge for six months and becomes the club’s fifth permanent manager in six years. It is the opposite end of the spectrum to where they need to be in order to have some sustained success but the former Bristol City and Sunderland manager will be hoping to break the trend.

Hibs’ start to life under the new manager has been a mixture of some good and bad. Big victories over Clyde and Bonnyrigg Rose came either side of a really disappointing result and performance in a 1-0 loss at Falkirk.

(odds taken 2000 GMT, Monday 18 July)
It leaves them in a battle with the Bairns for top spot. This is their last game of the group stage and know anything less than a win would hand Falkirk the advantage considering they still have two games left to play.
Johnson’s time at Easter Road has been busy with a number of new arrivals. Aiden McGeady – who played under him at the Stadium of Light – is one of the most high-profile and despite missing a penalty in the win on Sunday he could be a really big player for them this term.

Greenock Morton Preview – Are Morton capable of upsetting their Premiership hosts and bagging a first win in the group?

The first two games of this year’s League Cup have been a struggle for Morton and boss Dougie Imrie. A goalless draw and subsequent defeat on penalties at the hands of Falkirk was followed by a really poor 2-0 loss at Clyde on Saturday. Those results leave them rooted at the bottom of the section and without much hope of progressing.

Instead, attention now turns to using their last two games (finish against Bonnyrigg Rose on Saturday) as preparation for the start of the Championship season at the end of the month.

Morton finished seventh last season which was, in large part, down to Imrie’s arrival before the turn of the year. Survival will be the initial goal once again but if they can extend the form they showed in the calendar year over the course of a full season then the Greenock club could well be in with a chance of a playoff push.

With one of the smallest squads at their level, Morton will be looking to key players to step up , including the likes of Alan Lithgow in defence and new arrival Jaze Kabia in attack.

Hibernian vs Greenock Morton Betting Advice

This will be the first meeting between the teams in three years when they met in this same competition. Hibs eventually prevailed 5-3 after extra-time in what proved to be an enthralling game. Whether we see the same entertainment in this game remains to be seen but Morton will just be hoping they can put in an improved performance and break their duck in front of goal in this year’s League Cup.

Johnson knows that his team have to win with Falkirk favourites in both their remaining matches.

Key Facts –  Hibernian vs Greenock Morton Betting Tip

  • Hibs have won two and lost one so far in their three games, leading the group by one point over Falkirk
  • Morton are still looking for their first goal in this section, with a goalless draw and 2-0 defeat to their name
  • The teams met in this competition three years ago, Hibs eventually prevailing 5-3 after extra-time

Hibs may have conceded in each of their last two games but they can get the three points they need here and keep a clean sheet in the process.
