Mexico – Tata Martino at odds to halt current slump?

Qualifying for an eighth consecutive World Cup hangs in the balance for El Tri after they did themselves – or us for that matter, having tipped them to come through last Sunday’s contest unscathed – no favours with a goalless draw at home to Costa Rica. Gerardo Martino described the performance of his team as “bad”. He could easily have been referring to what is now a precarious position in this final qualifying phase.

Mexico move onto 18 points from 10 games (W5 D3 L2). However, the gap back to fourth-place Panama and the inter-continental play-off is now a point. Some good news, however, is that three of the last four qualifiers will be as hosts. But the run-in is less positive, facing Panama, El Salvador and USA on home soil and Honduras on the road. Not the easiest schedules coming off one win in six internationals (D2 L3).

Key Stat: Mexico haven’t been leading at half-time in three out of four 2022 World Cup qualifying home matches, the exception being their 3-0 win against bottom side Honduras.

Panama – Los Canaleros aren’t giving up on qualifying?

What was a bad Sunday for upcoming opponents Mexico developed into one of enormous promise for Panama. Trailing early doors to a Michail Antonio penalty, Los Canaleros rallied to record a 3-2 win that keeps them in fourth (W5 D2 L3) and on the coattails of the automatic qualifying spots. It was the perfect response to losing 1-0 away in Costa Rica, despite being the better team, only a few days earlier.

Panama simply could not turn their dominance into goals against Los Ticos. However, that is still three wins in four qualifiers – racking up 10 goals as they came from behind to clinch three vital points in each said victory. Moreover, they have already seized points from the USA and Mexico, via a 1-0 win and 1-1 draw, respectively, in Mexico City, so are not averse to holding their own against CONCACAF’s big guns.

Key Stat: Panama have scored ten times across their last four World Cup qualifying matches (W3 L1), having previously scored just four in their first six qualifiers (W2 D2 L2).

Mexico Vs Panama Betting Advice

Sunday’s events have only added to the intrigue ahead of Panama’s visits to Mexico City, where third entertains fourth in the final stage of CONCACAF’s World Cup qualifying process. The momentum is undoubtedly with our guests, however, a Panama side buoyed by a third come-from-behind victory in four rounds, defying an early setback to defeat Jamaica 3-2 in Panama City.

Mexico vs Panama – Key Facts:

  • Although these sides played out a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture last September, that ended a run of four consecutive victories for Mexico (three of them to nil).
  • Mexico are enduring a difficult period, failing to win three of their last four qualifying games (D1 L2) and having recorded only two clean sheets in their past seven internationals.
  • Panama’s confidence will be up, meanwhile, after winning three of their four previous qualifying games, scoring ten times in the process.

Mexico huffed and puffed last time but found no way through an obstinate Costa Rica backline. In theory, Panama should be more obliging. The visitors haven’t kept a clean sheet in four successive away qualifiers but did net ten times across their last four, home and away. That lends nicely to a wager on both teams scoring. Mexico have only kept two clean sheets in seven games and just two in four home qualifiers thus far.
