Motherwell’s only wins in 2022 have come in the Scottish Cup and they will be looking to add to that when Hibs visit Fir Park as both teams attempt to reach the last four of the competition cup.

Motherwell – Can ‘Well keep alive their hopes of a first Scottish Cup success since 1991?

It has been a difficult beginning to 2022 for Graham Alexander and his Motherwell players in terms of the Scottish Premiership. Having been fourth to begin the calendar year and looking at European qualification, the Fir Park club are now eighth and have a job to do to even reach the top six before the split next month. The reason for that is ‘Well have not won league game since returning from the winter break in mid-January.

Alexander will be looking at the fact that his team are one of four sitting on 36 points and they are also just a point behind fourth placed Hibs, so there is still plenty of room for optimism but they do need to start winning games.

It’s been a different story in terms of the cup, though. Motherwell – who have played both ties so far in the competition at Fir Park – have seen off Championship outfit Greenock Morton and then a good win against Aberdeen to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Alexander will hope that his team can continue that good run in the Scottish Cup and also exact some revenge for going out at the same stage last season against this opponent.

Hibernian Preview – Will last season’s finalists have enough in this one to get back to Hampden?

When Shaun Maloney was appointed Hibs’ boss at the end of 2021 there was an expectation that he would bring an exciting and expansive brand of football. Three months into his reign and albeit it’s still very early but it has been a much more pragmatic style. That has been no more apparent than in the last three games where Hibs have drawn each of them and there’s not been a goal at either end. In terms of Hibs’ attacking play, there’s barely been any real chances which is an obvious concern. They’ve also not scored in four of their last five away games.

On a more positive note, it is now four clean sheets in a row so it may well be Maloney is looking to make his team hard to beat in the formative stages of developing it.

Hibs’ run to this stage has seen them face lower league opposition in both previous ties but progressing in very different circumstances. They laboured to an extra-time win over Cove Rangers before going away from home and being too good for Arbroath – winning 3-1.

The Easter Road club very much target these cup competitions and reached the final of this tournament last season but losing in disappointing fashion to St Johnstone. They were back at Hampden in December to contest the League Cup final but Celtic proved to be too good on that occasion.

Motherwell vs Hibernian Betting Advice

As is the case when two teams from the same division face each other in March, there is unlikely to be any secrets as to their strengths and weaknesses. This is the fourth meeting between the teams of the campaign and each of them have been very close. Hibs got the better of ‘Well here on the opening day of the season with the last two ending in draws.

With a semi-final place up for grabs it is very much likely that this will be another closely contested game.

Key Facts –  Motherwell vs Hibernian Betting Tip

  • Motherwell have won only one of their last six at home (2-1 against Aberdeen in the previous round)
  • Each of Hibs’ last three games have finished goalless and they have failed to score in four of their last five away
  • The teams met at the same stage last season with Hibs progressing on penalties after a 2-2 draw

Motherwell may not be winning a lot of games just now but they’re still hard to beat and have drawn three of their last four. Combine that with Hibs sharing the points each of their last three plus two of the three meetings between the clubs this season ending in draws, that’s the way to go here.
