Motherwell Preview – Will ‘Well make it five straight wins in the league at Fir Park?

Motherwell and their manager Graham Alexander would have breathed a sigh of relief on Saturday after eventually seeing off Championship strugglers Greenock Morton at the weekend. It sees them move into the next round of the Scottish Cup which is the most important thing but the performance will give him some cause for concern. ‘Well will have to be much better in the next round when taking on Aberdeen who they face at home next month.

Before that match, Motherwell returned from the winter break with a disappointing 3-1 loss away to Ross County, made even worse by the fact that their opponents were reduced to 10 men when the scores were level. It means they are now eight points behind third place Hearts and allowing the teams below them to move closer.

The Fir Park club had finished 2021 strongly with back to back wins against St Johnstone and Livingston but losing not only their top scorer but also the player who leads the scoring charts in the Premiership was not what they would have envisaged. Tony Watt, who hit nine in the first half of the season, has joined Dundee United.

It might only be a couple of games but scoring goals could well be the issue for Motherwell in the weeks ahead as they look to stay in the top four. Kevin van Veen is the only player in the squad who has more than two goals to his name.

Hibernian Preview – Can Hibs move into third with a rare away win in the league?

Hibernian were another team who struggled to see off lower league opposition in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup. Shaun Maloney’s team required a Kevin Nisbet goal in extra-time to knock out League One leaders Cove Rangers. Despite having most of the play and some good chances it was an overall insipid display.

Maloney’s appointment was met with a lot of anticipation and excitement last month but it looks like it is going to take some time for the former Belgium assistant to get his style implemented.

Prior to that, Hibs were brushed aside 2-0 by Celtic in their first league match back. They had defeated Aberdeen and Dundee United before the winter break and those points moved them into fifth and looking to improve on that with a win here. With the Edinburgh derby next week at Easter Road, there will also be some feeling they can fight for third place.

There has been some noticeable transfer activity in January. Christopher Mueller and Elias Melkersen will provide more options in attack but they too seen their top scorer move on. Martin Boyle (14 goals in all competitions) ended six years at the club with a move to Saudi Arabia.

Motherwell vs Hibernian Betting Advice

If either of these teams do harbour hopes of challenging Hearts for third place then they know nothing less than a win here will be good enough. Motherwell’s home form will give them confidence as they look for a fifth straight home win for the first time in three years. They have conceded in just one of those victories, too.

If Hibs are to enjoy a better second half to the season then their away form has to improve. They’ve lost five of their last eight on the road in the league. One of their three away wins in the league did come here, however, back on the opening weekend of the season.

Key Facts –  Motherwell vs Hibernian Betting Tip

  • Motherwell have won five straight at Fir Park (four in the league)
  • Hibs have won only three away games in the Scottish Premiership this season
  • Both teams lost their top scorers in the January transfer window

With neither team looking the most threatening following key losses in the forward areas this could well be a game with few goals. Eight of Hibs’ last 10 league games have had two or fewer goals and the same in seven of Motherwell’s last 10. Under 2.5 is the way to go here.
