Motherwell Preview – Can ‘Well get their first league win of the season and potentially move off bottom spot?

As much of a surprise as Motherwell’s season was last time around when finishing third, their start to this campaign has been equally so. ‘Well find themselves bottom of the table and still looking for their first league win of the new season. Six games in and they have taken just two points from those, scoring only two goals. Both of those came in a 2-2 draw at home to Livingston and it’s to the real frustration of Stephen Robinson that his team have been below the standards they set.

Robinson, like several of his peers, will be hoping that the extended break will work in his favour and they can get back to winning ways starting tomorrow.

Motherwell have managed to pick up a win in Europa League qualifying and they will attempt to progress further on Thursday. The priority is very much the league, however, and the longer they are rooted to the bottom the harder it will be for them to avoid being involved in a relegation battle.

The biggest concern for Robinson aside from the lack of wins is how toothless his team have looked in attack. Two blanks in three home league games is evidence of that.

It’s fair to say that the team experiencing the most change in the Scottish top-flight this season is St Johnstone. Their manager of seven seasons (the second longest in the league) departed and Tommy Wright was replaced with one of his former assistants Callum Davidson. This is Davidson’s first job as a head coach and he’s also had to oversee a significant turnover of players.

Saints have shown some real desire to pick up points for their new boss and the 1-0 win over St Mirren last time out means it’s been a pretty positive start all in.

St Johnstone sit seventh coming into this game and have been unfortunate not have more than the seven points from their first six games. Two 1-0 defeats at home to Aberdeen and Hibs are examples of games that could have went either way.

Like his opposite number tomorrow, Davidson will also be hoping to see his team be more threatening going forward. They have enjoyed a lot of possession in those home defeats bit lacked the quality going forward to take the lead when on top in both matches.

It’s likely there will be little between the two and a match that will be decided by fine margins. With just six goals scored between them I’m not expecting a classic and it may well be a goal either way settles it. Under 2.5 goals is the selection at Fir Park.
