The end of the regular season is fast approaching in Scotland with St Mirren and St Johnstone both needing points for their respective ambitions. Both are also coming off the back of cup defeats at the weekend.

St Mirren Preview – Can Paisley Saints take a big step towards safety by taking all three points here?

It was disappointment in the Scottish Cup for Jim Goodwin and his St Mirren team on Saturday, losing out at home to Aberdeen in the quarter-finals. It’s a defeat that would have hurt due to the recent improvement in the Buddies form which has pulled them six points clear of bottom place Hearts. The key objective for Goodwin when taking over at St Mirren in the summer was to preserve the club’s top-flight status.
As it stands at the moment they are on course not only to avoid relegation but also finish outside the relegation playoff which they were part of last season.

The Saints have given themselves a cushion over bottom club Hearts due to a good recent run which has seen them pick up six points in five matches. That may not seem all that impressive but for a team who have been lurking down the bottom it’s solid form.
They have also only lost one of their last five in the league and all those draws could well be crucial come the end of the season.

St Johnstone Preview – Will St Johnstone bounce back from cup defeat to keep their top six hopes alive?

Tommy Wright was frustrated that his team couldn’t hold out and take Celtic to a replay in the Scottish Cup at the weekend but his team have to get that out their heads as they go in search of the points which could yet see them finish in the top half. Considering this was a team who were bottom of the table not long before Christmas it has been a terrific turnaround.

The 1-0 defeat to Celtic at the weekend was the Perth Saints only loss in their last seven games across all competitions but it would have been one of the most pleasing performances against a team who have put goals past them for fun in recent years.

Taking their form back further and Livingston are the only side, outside of Celtic, to have beaten St Johnstone since the end of November. That’s now just three defeats in 15 games and it’s why they are only five points behind Hibernian in sixth place, having played a game less.

St Johnstone will travel to face the Easter Road club in the middle of this month and if they can go there within touching distance it sets it up for a big 90 minutes in the context of both’s season.

St Mirren vs St Johnstone Betting Advice

This will be the third meeting of the season between the two Saints and if the visitors have their way it will be the last. For that to happen and improve St Johnstone’s chances of finishing in the top six beyond the split, they’ll have to do something they’ve not managed this season – score a goal against St Mirren.
The two previous meetings this season have been a 2-0 win in Paisley and a goalless draw in Perth. Whilst a point would not be a terrible result for the home team, more is needed for St Johnstone.

Key Facts – St Mirren vs St Johnstone Betting Tip

  • It’s now just one defeat in five league games for St Mirren, moving them six clear of bottom place
  • St Johnstone are unbeaten in their last five league games and have hopes of a top six finish
  • St Mirren have taken four points off the Perth Saints this season – winning the last meeting here 2-0

Unfortunately for Wright, his team have the most amount of draws in the Scottish Premiership with 11 from their 27 games played so far. Combining that with St Mirren who have three draws in their last five and lost only one of their last five at home in the league, the draw is an appealing bet on Wednesday.
