Welcome to my World Cup 2018 betting tips, and next up is an all-European clash between Sweden and Switzerland when the two teams face off against each other at the Saint Petersburg Stadium with a place in the last eight up for grabs for both sides.
Sweden finished surprise winners of Group F with six points to their name, and topped the group ahead of runners-up, Mexico, thanks to a superior goal difference, but the real shock of the group was that favourites, Germany, finished bottom and failed to qualify for the knock-out stages for the first time in their World Cup history.
Sweden’s path to the knock-out stages started with a 1-0 win over South Korea, which was followed by a 2-1 defeat to Germany, and the feeling was that the Germans would then go on a winning run, but this didn’t eventuate as Sweden bounced back with a shock 3-0 victory over Mexico to seal their place in the last 16.
The Swedes continue to prove a difficult outfit to beat, and their 4-4-2 formation is tried and tested with the likes of Forsberg and Claesson providing the width, while Toivonen and Berg look to feed off their crosses. A back four consisting of Granqvist and Lindelof has been very solid so far in this tournament too.
Onto Switzerland, and they edged out Serbia to finish runners-up behind group favourites, Brazil, in Group E with five points as the Swiss remained unbeaten throughout the group stages. Switzerland started their campaign with an excellent 1-1 draw against Brazil, and they made the most of this great start with what proved to be a decisive 2-1 win over Serbia.
A 2-2 draw against Costa Rica was a disappointing result but it proved to be enough to see Switzerland through to the knock-out rounds, where they’ll meet a stubborn Sweden side who will give no quarter I’m sure.
Switzerland possess some key attacking personnel in the shape of Shaqiri, Xhaka and striker Seferovic, but having kept just one clean sheet in their last five matches in all competitions, the edge could lie with Sweden here.
