Preview: Sunday’s loss to Canada has eaten into the USA‘s wriggle room in CONCACAF qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. Can the USMNT produce the desired response when Honduras, who are yet to record a win in ten qualifying matches so far, visit Allienz Field in Minnesota, United States.

USA – Winning response imperative from Stars and Stripes?

There is a new top dog in the CONCACAF region. And, at long last, it isn’t one of Mexico or the USA. Sunday’s loss for the USMNT to Canada, succumbing 2-0 inside a partisan Tim Hortons Field in Ontario, reinforced The Canucks as the lead protagonist in the race to confirm a place at Qatar 2022. For the US, meanwhile, their qualification fate remains up in the air – but, crucially, still in their own hands.

Gregg Berhalter was in defiant mood post-match, stating the result hurt but not the performance itself. USA created next to nothing in open play, though, and have now netted twice across their past three qualifiers (W1 D1 L1). Will we see any improvement upon returning to home comforts? The Yanks have four wins and a draw from five home matches so far. Despite only netting eight times in these contests.

Key Stat: Just two of the USA’s past seven 2022 World Cup qualifiers featured both teams scoring. The USMNT defence has only been breached twice across five home qualifiers so far, and never on more than one occasion.

Honduras – Seventh qualifying defeat in a row beckoning?

With four sets of fixtures left in which to navigate, it says much about the newfound competitiveness of North and Central American football that only one nation is officially eliminated from qualifying contention. That team, however, is Honduras who won’t be adding to 2010 and 2014 group stage appearances in South Africa and Brazil, respectively, anytime soon after failing to win a single qualifier thus far (D3 L7).

The rut goes much deeper than this qualification campaign, though. Los Catrachos were last seen celebrating a win of any kind at last summer’s Gold Cup, failing to repeat the feat in all 13 subsequent matches (D3 L1). This includes their current wretched run of seven consecutive losses, six in qualifying. On top of this, they are the lowest scorers in this Octagonal stage, netting a measly five at a rate of 0.5 per-game.

Key Stat: Honduras were beaten 2-0 at home by El Salvador in their latest qualifying encounter, their second loss to nil in quick succession and sixth of ten 2022 World Cup qualifiers in all.

USA Vs Honduras Betting Advice

Sunday’s events in Ontario means there is a greater onus on the United States banking maximum points from this final February WC qualifier against Honduras, who sit last of this eight-team Octagonal stage for good reason. That reason being, they’re not very good. Los Catrachos are the only team yet to win in ten attempts, all whilst averaging well below a goal-a-game (0.5) and conceding the most (19, or 1.9 per-game).

USA Vs Honduras – Key Facts:

  • Last September’s 4-1 scoreline when these sides met in Honduras emphasised the sheer gulf in quality between the sides. That a sixth victory in the last eight head-to-heads for USA (D2) who are unbeaten since a 2-1 loss away from home in February 2013.
  • USA boast a near-perfect home record in qualification, winning four of five (D1), but haven’t held a half-time lead in any of these contests.
  • Three of USA’s four home victories were to nil. Honduras are the lowest scorers, meanwhile, with five. However, Los Catrachos did net in three of their five away qualifiers so far (D2 L3).

However, those expecting a similar scoreline to that which we saw in the reverse fixture, when USA ran up a 4-1 victory, could be in for disappointment. The Yanks have won four of five at home so far, held by the still unbeaten Canadians in the other, but are yet to notch more than two goals as hosts. The margin in half of those victories was a solitary goal. So while Honduras are clearly ripe for the taking, expect routine and not rout.
