Porto News and Form – Can Porto secure home win over Rangers?

It was a 2-1 home win that Porto took on Matchday 1 over Swiss side Young Boys. But then on a trip to Feyenoord, they lost 2-0. They have hosted Scottish opposition five times before and have taken a W3 D2 record from that. Their most recent home fixture against a side from Scotland was back in the 2001/02 Champions League when the Dragons secured a 3-0 success over Celtic. Last season, Porto finished second in the Portuguese top flight and also lost the Portuguese Cup final.

Porto were in the Champions League qualifiers this season but lost in the third round against Krasnodar. Porto have only been involved in one previous Europa League group stage campaign. That was in 2010/11 when they went through to win the title. Porto are only W3 D3 L6 in their last twelve games in the Europa League. They are W6 D1 L1 in the group stage though and W3 D1 at home.

Porto v Rangers Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between the clubs
Rangers won both meetings at Ibrox
Porto are W1 D1 at home against Rangers

Key-Facts – Porto v Rangers

  • Porto have lost one previous UEL group stage home game
  • The Dragons are unbeaten at home against Scottish visitors
  • The Gers have won 7 of 10 European games this season

Rangers News and Form

Rangers began their campaign with a good 1-0 home win against Feyenoord, but then they threw away a lead out in Berne against Young Boys. A positive for Rangers on this difficult away game is that they have remained unbeaten in their last four away games in Portugal. That is a W2 D2 record that the Scottish side have taken in that sequence. This is just the second group stage campaign by Rangers.

Last season they failed to get an away win on the board (D1 L2). So throw on top their loss at Young Boys this season, Rangers are struggling for away form in the competition. But you can turn that around as the loss in Berne is the only European defeat that the Gers have taken this season. They have taken a W7 D2 L1 in their ten games played this season, racking up a total of seven clean sheets. Rangers started in the first qualifying round of this season’s Europa League.

Porto v Rangers Predictions

Porto to win: Rangers, with their defensive strengths may be able to stick in there until half time, but they are likely to slip to a defeat. This is a very tough away game for them and their resilience may get broken by the Dragons. Home win.
