With a month to go until Christmas 2020, there are a few signs that there could be a white Christmas hitting parts of the UK.

The official qualification for recording a White Christmas is “one snowflake to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25 December somewhere in the UK”.

Hard winter coming?

So it’s a pretty broad scope that the Met Office has for the criteria to be fulfilled.

In the last 54 years of recording, there have been 38 official white Christmases through to 2015.

The average trend is about once every six years on average. The last one happened three years ago in 2017. That’s when there was snow seen in northern England and areas of southern Scotland on December 25th.

A Met Office statement this week suggested “typical” winter weather was heading for the UK.

“The confidence for the outlook into December is low, but the general trend suggests typical early winter weather with periods of persistent rain and showery interludes,” it said.

“Overall the best of the driest and brightest weather in the south and east. Frost and fog patches are likely during any settled spells, and any wintry precipitation is likely in cooler and more unsettled spells over the high ground of the north and northwest.

“There is a risk of gales, with the strongest winds being seen to the north and northwest.”

Coldest Winter Odds

Coral have jumped into the game by offering 6/4 odds that December 2020 is going to be the coldest ever on record* (betting odds taken November 25th, 2020 at 16:21 GMT).

Part of that has prompted the speculations by punters over a White Christmas happening as well this year.

The Weather Company has already announced that it is likely to be the “coldest winter in 8 years” that’s coming to the UK with “Arctic influxes” of snow and ice.

The Met Office backed that up with warnings of pending below-average temperature.

There are specific White Christmas betting areas to look at. Such as the 5/1 odds on a London White Christmas, with shorter priced options naturally coming further north with Newcastle and Edinburgh at 3/1* (betting odds taken November 25th, 2020 at 16:21 GMT).

Other options are Belfast 4/1, Cardiff 4/1, Dublin 4/1 and Manchester 4/1* (betting odds taken November 25th, 2020 at 16:21 GMT)

As blanket coverage on white Christmas betting, a quote of 10/11 odds-on is available with Ladbrokes for ANY part of the UK to get some snow on Christmas Day 2020* (betting odds taken November 25th, 2020 at 16:21 GMT).
