Vitoria de Guimaraes News and Form – Can the Portuguese side pick up their first point?

Ivo Vieira’s Vitoria de Guimaraes have been very competitive in Europa League Group F, but the Portuguese side have yet to pick up a point from their three fixtures. The Conquerors lost 2-0 to Standard Liege and 1-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt in their opening two.

On matchday three, Guimaraes led twice but ultimately failed to hold on for what would have been a famous win at the Emirates Stadium. Vitoria went on to lose 3-2 to the Gunners in London.

 

 

Guimaraes, who finished fifth in the Primeira Liga last season, will not give up hope on a top two finish in Group F. However, it will be curtains for Viera’s troops if they lose to Arsenal for a second time in 13 days on Wednesday.

Arsenal will be gunning for a first win in four games on Wednesday. Since beating Guimaraes at the Emirates at the end of last month, Emery’s team have drawn two and lost one of their last three in all competitions.

Nevertheless, the London outfit have been excellent in the Europa League so far this term, taking maximum points from their opening three. Last season’s finalists eased to wins over Frankfurt (3-0) and Liege (4-0) in their opening two. They then needed some Pepe magic to eventually see off Guimaraes two weeks ago.

Arsenal will book their spot in the last 32 of the Europa League with victory in Portugal in midweek. Like they were at the Emirates, though, Guimaraes will be tough opponents for the Gunners.

Arsenal win: Vitoria almost caused a huge upset at the Emirates last month, taking the lead twice but failing to hold on. The Gunners would have learned a lot from Vieira’s side in that one, and they will no doubt be in for a tough game on Wednesday.

Arsenal have won just one away game since beating Newcastle United 1-0 at St James’ Park on the opening weekend of the Premier League season back in August. However, that victory did come at Frankfurt in the Europa League. I fancy Emery’s men to win by one goal (3/1) in Portugal in midweek.

Arsenal have scored the opening goal in six of their eight league and cup wins this term. The Premier League side will be wary of Guimaraes’ start having conceded after just eight minutes in the reverse game. I’m backing Arsenal to open the scoring in this one at 4/6.
