Apollon Limassol – Cypriot champs forgotten how to win?

After finishing runners-up domestically in 2021, Apollon Limassol would go one better the following season. Clinching the club’s fourth Cypriot league title – their first for sixteen years – at the end of 2021-22, and thus a spot in the Champions League qualifying rounds. Their spell in the competition is looking as though it will be short-lived, however, unless they can turn around a 4-0 deficit in Limassol.

The Cypriots played the final thirty minutes a man light and must now do without defender Vukasin Jovanovic. Even prior to the 26-year-old’s dismissal, though, the visitors were a distant second best. Finishing their first competitive outing for more than two months without mustering an attempt on target and compounding a miserable pre-season campaign, with that a fourth loss in five over the summer.

Key Stat: Any hope Apollon Limassol can turn this tie around are tempered by their recent results in Europe as hosts, succumbing to heavy defeats to PSV (0-4), Lech Poznan (0-5) and Zilina (1-3) in three of their past four such matches.

 

 

Maccabi Haifa – Expect the goals to keep on flowing?

Israel’s reigning league champions ran riot a week ago, and produced the scoreline their dominance merited. Racking up 21 shots, 11 of which were on target, The Greens from the Carmel scored twice either side of a red card for the visitors to all but put this tie to bed. Putting on another attacking clinic, they have now scored four in successive rounds after thrashing Olympiacos 4-0 in Greece a week earlier.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be all that surprised by their exploits thus far. Maccabi Haifa plundered 79 goals in just 36 games on their way to lifting the Isreali Premier League in May, finishing eight points clear with a staggering +52 goal difference. More could yet be to come though. With that emphatic win in Greece, Haifa have netted four or more in three of their last four away European qualifiers (W3 L1).
