It’s match day five in Group A, and things are still not any clearer in respect of who will join group leaders, Manchester United, into the last 16 of the Champions League as hosts Basel look to cling onto second place by avoiding defeat in Switzerland this evening.
Basel sit in second place but level on six points with third placed CSKA Moscow by virtue of a better goal difference, but they’ll be very mindful that CSKA hold home advantage when they take on bottom club Benfica in the other Group A match this evening.
Basel have won two, lost two so far in the group with wins over Benfica 5-0 at home and a 2-0 win away at CSKA Moscow, but defeats against Manchester United and CSKA (at home) still have the Swiss outfit sweating on their last two group matches of this campaign.
Visitors Manchester United come into match day five in confident mood after having swept aside Newcastle United 4-1 at Old Trafford on the weekend, and they just require a point against Basel this evening to secure their place in the knock-out stages of the Champions League.
United have been dominant in Group A so far, winning all four of their matches, scoring a total of 10 goals and conceding just 1 goal in the process, and manager Jose Mourinho has the likes of striker Ibrahimovic returning from injury which will bolster his options in the final third.
Although Mourinho may well rotate his squad for this match, they have plenty of depth to accommodate this, and players like Pogba and Rojo may well get some game time here to build up their fitness ahead of the busy Christmas period.
