The second half of the round of 16 matches in the Champions League gets underway on Tuesday night, and my first preview features German champions-elect, Bayern Munich taking on Turkish club, Besiktas in their first leg clash at the Allianz Arena.
Since losing 2-1 away at Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Bundesliga back in November, Bayern Munich have embarked upon an amazing 15-match winning streak in all competitions, which has seen them completely dominate the domestic top flight, the DFB Pokal and has seen them progress to the last 16 of the Champions League at a canter.
The German champions have won their last 12 home matches on the trot overall, while in the Champions League, only Real Madrid have walked away from the Allianz Arena with a win from the last 20 matches played there – the rest of the matches have all been won by this evening’s hosts!
Besiktas therefore face a mountain to climb if they’re to progress any further in this competition, and a very tough assignment awaits them in Munich on Tuesday night as the Turkish club look to stay in this tie ahead of the second leg in Istanbul.
Besiktas have an unbeaten seven match run under their belts though in all competitions, which include three Super Lig wins over Antalyaspor, Kasimpasa and Kardemir, while they’ve won their last three away matches on the trot in the Champions League with wins at Porto, Monaco and RB Leipzig during the group stages.
The visitors might just sneak a goal themselves here, with the likes of Talisca, Babel and Negredo in their ranks, but Bayern Munich possess Lewandowski who is a prolific predator on the european stage, and the hosts should come out on top here.
