Preview: Another Last-Sixteen tie versus English opposition for Bayern Munich, who are seeking to fare better than last season when eliminated at this same stage by Liverpool. Can the German side secure a positive first-leg outcome on this occasion or will Chelsea seize on home advantage in this opening leg?

Chelsea Preview – Inconsistent Blues have it all to do?

Group H came down to the finest of margins. Chelsea qualified in second with a record of W3 D2 L1, finishing a point clear of third-placed Ajax and were denied top spot courtesy of an inferior head-to-head record with Valencia. Which all meant a difficult draw for the first knockout round was highly likely, and so it has transpired with The Blues set to renew acquaintances with Bayern Munich for the first time since the 2012 final.

Chelsea’s greatest triumph in this competition came against Bayern Munich, beating the German side inside their Allianz Arena, in Munich, eight seasons ago. That was on penalties after a 1-1 scoreline at full-time. The pair have met four times in a competitive setting in total, producing a combined 17 goals for an average of 4.25 per game. Both teams netted on all four occasions meanwhile, so there is every chance of end-to-end drama when these two clubs reconvene in West London.

Had this fixture been last week, some supporters might have been forgiven for fearing the worst. Saturday’s victory over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge will have gone some way to lifting spirits, with that timely success a first for Frank Lampard’s men in five Premier League games. It marked only their second league win at home in the last six (W2 D1 L3) though, while their record in England during the group was also poor, beating only Lille (2-1) whilst drawing with Ajax (4-4) and losing to Valencia (0-1).

Bayern Munich Preview – Indomitable Germans out to make amends?

For a second successive season Bayern Munich were drawn alongside English opposition in the Round of 16. Twelve months ago the Bavarians went to Anfield and secured what they believed to be was a promising 0-0 draw with the eventual winners of the competition, Liverpool. Only to end up losing the second-leg 3-1 in Germany, subsequently crashing out at the last-sixteen stage of the tournament for only the first time in eight previous campaigns.

The German champions – for the past seven seasons no less – paid the price for showing Liverpool a little too much respect in the first-leg. An away goal would have set them up nicely and yet they clearly set out to keep it tight defensively first and foremost. We can therefore expect a wholly different approach on Tuesday, especially with the opposition not of the same standard on this occasion. No team this season boasts a better goals-per-game average away from home in the Bundesliga than Bayern (2.63).

Furthermore, how could we possibly forget what happened the last time Die Roten were in the English capital? Bayern’s 7-2 scoreline away to Tottenham on Matchday 2 one of six victories during a flawless campaign in Group A, scoring a remarkable 24 times – seven more than any other team in the competiton – and for the loss of just 5 goals conceded. Robert Lewandowski claimed 10 of those strikes but, as remarkable as it may seem, has racked up 597 minutes since his last goal in the knockout rounds.

Chelsea Vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick had the benefit of an additional 24 hours to prepare his team for this first-leg, with the Germans beating bottom side Paderborn in Bundesliga action on Friday. Chelsea, meanwhile, were involved the following afternoon, comfortably overcoming a poor Tottenham performance to win 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. Just a second win in the last six league and cup games for Frank Lampard’s men, who must now entertain formidable opponents which have not lost a competitive encounter since early December (W10 D1).

Chelsea Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts

  • Across their last six Champions League matches played at home, Chelsea were victorious only once (W1 D4 L1).
  • In all competitions, Bayern Munich have not lost a match since December 7, 2019 – winning ten of eleven competitive fixtures thereafter.
  • Four previous encounters between the two clubs averaged 4.25 goals per game.

More recently, Chelsea have proven an enigma for me. Not that it should count as much of a surprise: they’ve struggled for consistency all season. Bayern are the antithesis of this; a machine that churns out win after win. I’m sure The Bridge will do its best to create an atmosphere under the lights but this Bayern Munich team truly are something else once in full flow. There could be goals, however, I suspect the visitors will prove too strong ultimately.
