Preview: Marco Reus’ brilliantly taken goal at Etihad Stadium may have been sandwiched between strikes from Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden for Man City but it has provided the German side with a glimmer of hope, as Borussia Dortmund seek to cash in on home advantage at Signal Iduna Park.

Borussia Dortmund – Haaland’s goals needed more than ever?

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic had every reason to feel aggrieved with some aspects of the first-leg in Manchester. Mainly the hugely controversial decision from Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan to deny Jude Bellingham a perfectly legitimate goal that would have represented the precocious teenager’s first ever in UEFA competition. More than that, it would have brought about an all important away goal.

In the end Marco Reus did strike, after some neat build up involving Erling Haaland, to give Die Schwarzgelben something to build from ahead of the return leg in Germany. Which is, of course, now a must win encounter. The aforementioned Norwegian was shackled well in Manchester meanwhile, registering his first blank in seven Champions League appearances this term, and will be eager to atone in Germany.

That first leg marked the fifth defeat in their last sixteen European matches (W9 D2), with all five occurring on the road. Moreover, since the start of last season BVB boast a seven-match unbeaten run at home in the Champions League. Only denied a third win in four such outings this term by a late equaliser in the second leg of their triumphant Round of 16 tie with last season’s Europa League winners Sevilla.

Manchester City – Foden has tournament favourites in control?

Phil Foden’s fifth Champions League goal, all spread across the previous three seasons, is all that separate the sides ahead of the second and decisive leg in Germany. Now a fully fledged England international, Foden had other opportunities to add to Kevin de Bruyne’s opening goal at the Etihad Stadium. As it is, Man City only lead 2-1 on aggregate. The tie tantalisingly poised at the midway point.

Foden would swiftly make his 40th club appearance of the season as a substitute in Saturday’s surprising 2-1 Premier League loss at home to Leeds United. Ending City’s six-match winning run in all competitions. Meanwhile the likes of Reuben Dias, Kyle Walker, Rodri, Riyah Mahrez and De Bruyne were all unused substitutes as Pep Guardiola seemingly sacrificed a positive result in the league for one in Europe.

The Cityzens were also breached for the first time in Europe during that first leg, bringing an end to 790 consecutive minutes without conceding in Europe. City had previously registered seven straight clean sheets in the competition, including both legs of their Round of 16 tie with another German club Borussia Monchengladbach. Another on Wednesday would see them progress onto a first semi-final since 2015/16.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Manchester City Betting Advice

Whereas some star performers for Man City  were putting their feet up over the weekend, albeit overseeing their fellow team-mates suffer a shock Premier League defeat at the hands of Leeds, Dortmund coach Edin Tarzic had little option but to opt for full strength against Stuttgart for what was a must win clash. Win they did. However, it was another wholly unconvincing display from a side languishing outside the Champions League places in Germany’s Bundesliga.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Manchester City – Key Facts:

  • These teams met for only the third time last week. A 2-1 victory for Man City representing the club’s maiden success in this fixture (D1 L1 previously).
  • The first-leg result ensured a sixth straight loss versus English opposition for Dortmund. Meanwhile, for Man City it was a seventh successive success against German adversaries.
  • Man City hadn’t conceded in seven consecutive Champions League games prior to the first leg. Conversely, Dortmund have now scored in all eight matches in this season’s tournament.Four previous encounters between the two clubs averaged 4.25 goals per game.

Six of Dortmund’s past seven matches seen both teams score, along with nine of the last eleven staged at Signal Iduna Park. Man City’s formidable backline could spoil the party. However, with the hosts needing to score and City notorious for crumbling at the quarter-final stage, we could be set for another humdinger. City do boast three wins in four away Champions League outings this term, though. A repeat of the first leg is therefore plausible.
