Preview: Just the one goal from the first-leg leaves this UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie finely poised. F91 Dudelange, holding that slim lead, will be the ones expected to progress, though, tasked with seeing it out against Pyunik Yerevan over in Luxembourg at their Jos Nosbaum stadium.

F91 Dudelange – Luxembourg’s finest on cusp of next round?

Luxembourg’s 16-time domestic league champions are well-versed in these early qualifying rounds, with this their thirteenth attempt at reaching the group stage of the Champions League. On just one previous occasion, however, would they make it further than the second round. Therefore nothing can be taken for granted even with that 1-0 advantage from the first-leg, courtesy of a second-half Samir Hadji penalty.

That made it a third straight win in Europe this season, having edged Albania’s Tirana 1-0 at home and 2-1 away in the opening round. Their prospects of successfully defending said lead are bolstered by their record of one defeat across ten previous home European qualifying matches (W5 D4 L1), winning three of the last four – among those victories a 2-1 success over another Armenian outfit, Ararat-Armenia.

Key Stat: F91 Dudelange would only preserve their clean sheet on two occasions across their last 14 European qualifying matches as a host.

Pyunik Yerevan – Tall order from here for Armenians?

Armenia’s most decorated club, claiming league title number 31 last season with a game to spare, have it all to do in this deciding leg if they are to progress onto the third qualifying round in this competition for the first time in their history. This after riding their luck to a memorable victory, of sorts, in the round prior; twice equalising late on – in normal time and extra-time – before ousting Romania’s CFR Cluj on penalties.

If penalties were their saviour in the first round, it could end up being the source of their demise if they cannot turn around a 1-0 deficit in Luxembourg. Now, a team which won 12 of 16 away fixtures whilst boasting a 100% scoring record, on their way to clinching another Armenian Premier League, must do something they’ve managed only twice in ten attempts since 2015: win an away qualifying leg (W2 D2 L6).

Key Stat: Pyunik Yerevan posses a dreadful record on their travels when in the second round of the Champions League, losing all eight such games with five of these being ‘to nil’.

F91 Dudelange Vs Pyunik Yerevan Betting Advice

A competitive first leg encounter in Armenia looked to be heading for a dour stalemate. That was until the visitors on the night struck home a second-half penalty. Aside from that, though, there really wasn’t much between them. Both limited to speculative efforts for the most part and only Dudelange creating what UEFA deemed as a ‘Clear Chance’, with one of their two such efforts being that aforementioned penalty.

Dudelange Vs Pyunik – Key Facts:

  • The side’s first ever meeting took place in Yerevan a week ago. Samir Hadji’s penalty in the 72nd minute settling a hard-fought encounter with very few clear chances.
  • F91 Dudelange have only once before hosted opponents from Armenia. They did, however, win that encounter. Qualifying for the Europa League group stage in 2019-20 courtesy of a 2-1 win in Luxembourg over Ararat-Armenia.
  • Needing to win to have any chance of reaching the competition’s next round, Pyunik make their way to Stade Jos Nosbaum in the knowledge they have won only one of their last six European away games (W1 D2 L3).

Bookmakers are clearly anticipating a similar encounter to the first, with Dudelange priced up tentatively as favourites. Playing at home is a boost. However this is a game the home side don’t actually need to win. So I don’t envisage them taking too many risks. Moreover, Pyunik hadn’t scored in seven of twelve previous European away games before netting late on in Romania last time out. I’ll oppose goals and the away win.
