Hapoel Be’er Sheva will hold home advantage in this first leg of the third qualifying round against Bulgarian side Ludogorets following a successful two-legged win over Honved in the previous qualifying round.
Be’er Sheva registered a 5-3 win on aggregate over the Hungarian title winners, winning the first leg at home 2-1 and then following that up with a 3-2 win away in the second leg to take their place in this round.
Hapoel Be’er Sheva secured the Ligat Ha’al title over Maccabi Tel Aviv which was thanks to an impressive 15-match unbeaten streak which included what proved to be a decisive 2-1 win away at Maccabi Tel Aviv towards the end of the campaign. Be’er Sheva have won their last four matches on the trot.
Bulgarian champions, Ludogorets, also secured their passage into this third qualifying round by registering a 5-3 aggregate win over Zalgiris although they trailed 2-1 after the first leg away from home, but bounced back in emphatic fashion by winning the second leg at home 4-1 to march into this third qualifying round.
That 4-1 win was actually Ludogerets’ first win for nine matches though in the Champions League which ended a barren spell of results that included four defeats. That said, they’ve now gone five away matches without a win on the road, including a 6-0 rout by Arsenal last season.
With home advantage first up, I believe Hapoel Be’er Sheva have enough about them to at least avoid defeat here, if not sneak a narrow lead ahead of next week’s second leg in Razgrad.
