Inter Milan – Nerazzurri out to write the wrongs of 2020-21?

Drawn alongside Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk for the second season running, Inter Milan know all about two of their three opponents in Group D. Last season, a side constructed by Antonio Conte proved too strong for everybody in Italy, clinching their first league title in 11 years in formidable fashion, but could only put together a forgettable campaign in Europe that was over before Christmas.

Inter won one of six matches in the 2020-21 Champions League group stage to finish bottom on six points. Match ups against Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk garnered a miserable total of two points out of twelve, failing to score in all but the 3-2 defeat in Madrid. So this is a nightmare section in many ways, even if it does contain the first Moldovan club to feature in the group stage, Sherrif Tiraspol.

The manager has since gone, to be replaced by former Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi, as have several important first-team members. So far, at least, this hasn’t overtly impacted them out on the pitch having taken seven of the first nine points on offer in Serie A this season. Held 2-2 in Sampdoria over the weekend after opening with 4-0 and 3-1 successes at home to Genoa and away at Verona, respectively.

Real Madrid – Happy return to Milan for Ancelotti?

Seeing the reigning Serie A holders once again in their section must have been greeted positively back in Madrid. Real Madrid ended last season’s Group of Death somehow on top, despite winning fifty per cent of the time in a group that boasted Inter Milan, Borussia Monchengladbach and Shakhtar Donetsk. Six of their ten points coming in wins over the Nerazzurri, though, including a 2-0 triumph in Milan.

Victory at San Siro in November 2020 preserved Los Blancos’ tremendous record when facing Italian opposition, with that win number twelve from the last thirteen meetings. They have won all of the last six in Italy, recording a narrow-margin success away to Atalanta in last season’s Round of 16 on their way to the last four. All of a sudden, their odds about victory on Wednesday appear ever the more enticing.

Aside from a change of manager, there hasn’t been a huge amount of upheaval within the club. A huge plus is the return of the Santiago Bernabeu, but that isn’t a factor here. Carlo Ancelotti is back for a second spell, though. The Italian arrives from Everton as the manager who brought the Spanish side their tenth European Cup in 2013/14, and has already made a strong early impression on the domestic front (W3 D1).

Inter Milan Vs Real Madrid Betting Advice

Having toiled in a similar Champions League group in 2020-21, Inter Milan have plenty to prove as they look to end three successive seasons of missing out on knockout football. Last season, the Nerazzurri failed to take any points from games against Real Madrid, going down fighting in Madrid (3-2) but well beaten here in Milan (0-2). Making it eight losses across their previous ten meetings with Spanish opposition.

Inter Milan Vs Real Madrid – Key Facts:

  • Real Madrid will be hoping for a similar outcome to last season’s visit to San Siro, where goals from Eden Hazard and Achraf Hakimi (OG) sealed a 2-0 win against Inter Milan.
  • That above result means Inter Milan have lost eight of the last ten match ups against Spanish sides. Meanwhile, Real Madrid are on a six-match winning streak in Italy.
  • Goals have been flying in early in the season. Inter’s three Serie A games all produced exactly four goals while there has been on average 4.5 in Real Madrid’s four La Liga games.

If pressed into choosing a winner, it would be Real Madrid. The 13-time European champions boast a superb record against Italian opposition, winning 12 of the last 13 having won the last six times in Italy. Meanwhile, early indications are that neither will be keeping a clean sheet. The pair have recorded one apiece across seven combined league matches this season, with all but one of these games going Over 2.5 Goals.
