Preview: Top spot in Group B has been secured with two games to spare by Jurgen Klopp and his rampant Liverpool side. The Reds have scored 13 across their four group matches and will be smelling blood when FC Porto, breached on four or more occasions in three of their five most recent head-to-heads to have taken place since 2018, visit Anfield for a fifth time.

Liverpool – Klopp set to utilise his squad?

Jurgen Klopp’s charges are already assured of a place in the competition’s latter stages, where they will be among the favourites to add to their six previous titles in the competition. The Reds have made light work of arguably the toughest section, scoring 13 while conceding 5 in dispensing with AC Milan (3-2h), FC Porto (1-5a) and Atletico Madrid (2-3a, 2-0h). They will top Group B irrespective of their final two results.

We can expect changes to the usual starting XI then, as Klopp is already having to contend with a threadbare squad. With a packed winter schedule in front of them, he seems unlikely to take too many risks with key players. This could jeopardise the German’s incredible home record in the competition (W16 D5 L2) as Reds manager, with the likes of Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino and Ibrahim Konate set to feature.

Whoever is selected at Anfield, they will come into a team rich in form. The 2018-19 Champions League winners have won 13 of 18 (D4 L1) competitive matches this term, scoring at least twice in each of the previous fourteen. Furthermore, over the weekend they would deliver an emphatic response to a first loss of the campaign prior to the international break by dismantling an in-form Arsenal 4-0 on Merseyside.

FC Porto – Dragons eyeing up famous result?

Despite departing Italy with a sense of what might have been last time out, FC Porto will be only too aware that their qualifying destiny remains in their hands as we approach the penultimate matchday. Currently second, they find themselves seven points back from Wednesday’s opposition but, crucially, one and four points better off than Atletico Madrid and AC Milan, respectively, ahead of their visit to England.

Unfortunately, though, the omens are hardly conducive to a positive outcome. The 29-time Portuguese champions have only ever been victorious once in 22 attempts (D3 L18) when facing English opponents as the designated away team, with that sole success actually coming on neutral soil. Mustering up a solitary goal in four previous visits to Anfield, losing three of these said matches by an aggregate of 1-8.

They may never have a better opportunity to claim a famous win though. Sergio Conceicao’s men touch down on Merseyside on the back of three wins in their last four outings in all competitions (D1), winning seven of the last nine. Moreover, their record from a defensive standpoint has been mightily impressive of late in this competition, keeping a clean sheet in seven of the past nine group stage fixtures.

Liverpool Vs FC Porto Betting Advice

Unfortunately we are not privy to inside team news, and this makes assessing the chances of the home side extending their imperious record in Group B extremely difficult to gauge. With qualification as section winners in the bag, changes are almost certainly abound, and this will only lead to the Portuguese side’s confidence about attaining a famous – and important – result increasing as kick-off approaches.

Liverpool Vs FC Porto – Key Facts:

  • Whereas Liverpool (W4) have earned themselves a last sixteen berth with two group games remaining, FC Porto (W1 D2 L1) can follow them through should they win their final two outings.
  • There have been a minimum three goals in three of Liverpool’s four group games, with all three of the games in question seeing both teams on the scoresheet.
  • Porto are seeking their first-ever victory over Liverpool at the tenth attempt (D3 L6); four of the previous six seen them ship 4+ goals to the Reds.

Only three points keeps FC Porto in second ahead of the final matchday, where they host Atletico Madrid in a possible all or nothing encounter. The visitors are yet to net more than once so far, though, but that desire for a positive outcome coupled with Liverpool conceding in three of four group games, suggests we could see further goals between sides which had combined for an average 3.8 goals in their last six meetings.
